Hey DSLReports! I'm a longtime lurker and have gotten a ton of information from you folks in the past. This morning I created an account for the first time to pick your brains about some questions I have about the gigabit upgrade.
The current situation:
We currently have 75/75 and the setup to the router is over coaxial. Therefore, I am aware that the tech will need to switch this over to ethernet for provisioning the new upgrade. However, the way that I currently have our network setup is with multiple routers in place (connected to various coaxial connections in different rooms). There is one primary router that has the 192.168.1.1 address and I assigned the others 192.168.1.2 and so on. With this setup, they all can see all of the other devices regardless of where it is connected. We really enjoy this setup because I can connect my NAS up our guestroom and still have it be visible to every other device on the network.
In total, I have 4 routers at this time. The first being the primary (in a computer room on the 1st floor). There is another router (both of these are G1100s) in my bedroom. There is also a router down in the basement just to give ethernet to a computer down there and also an Actiontec up in the guestroom for the purpose of that NAS. Right now, ALL of these are connected over coaxial.
The questions:
If we want to retain how our network operates at this time, do we need every one of those coaxial drops to be converted over to ethernet? I would assume those coaxial hookups will remain active in case we ever connected a STB to one of them. The question is though - would the current network infrastructure be retained? I've been told that FiOS will only handle one ethernet run from the basement ONT to the primary router on the 1st floor and anything after that would be billable.
So another question would be - if we had them do that one drop and then I wanted to get the others wired up by a private contractor (or myself) - would I want to put a gigabit ethernet switch between the ONT and the primary router, or between the primary router and everywhere else?
I'm well versed with technology but I don't dabble in wiring all that much (I'm in IT) - but I've always learned that planning BEFORE a project will save you a ton of time and headache when it comes down to actually getting things done.
Ideally, we would like to have as little downtime as possible - but some is unavoidable I know.
Any ideas for best ways to approach this?
Thanks to you folks in advance for any insights! Please forgive my stupidity and potential follow-up questions!

[FiOS Phone] Where does dial tone come from?
I have Fios phone and internet. If I have dial tone on the phone, does that mean the fiber connection to the central office is working, or am I just getting a dial tone from the ONT?
I know I could try making a phone call, but I want to know if the presence of dial tone can serve as a quicker confirmation that the fiber connection is up. I'm thinking of a situation where I have an internet connection problem and I want to know if it's just the internet, or if my Fios service is down completely.

Any way to avoid crazy Upgrade from 150/10 to gigabit - crazy fees
Both my parents and I live in the same area (separate houses) and we both have 150/150 Verizon FIOS
In my house to upgrade to gigabit is about +$20mo (?) and for my parents it's about +$300(?) or something crazy - why the difference?
I asked the CSR and they said that my parents need an upgrade, and that I should sign up for 300/300 (cost me about $200 for the service call) and then they'd get the option to go gigabit - is this correct - I don't want to waste $200.
Is there any way to do this and avoid the $200?
thx

[Pricing] NEED your advice on RATES for 1 Gbps double play two phone lines
I'm about to commit to migrate from copper POTS to FIOS and need your negotiating advice to get best possible rates from Vz for the longest period. I'm in NYC, upper west side, Manhattan, zip 10023. My current CO (for POTS - DSL) is West 73rd Street
What we have now: Three Vz copper POTS phone lines with three different accounts, all in the snobby 212 area code. Two are mine in my name, of which one has our current DSL (7Mbps down, 786kbps up). The third is my wife's in her name and is very important for her business.
What we want: FIOS @ 1Gbps with lowest possible ping and buffer bloat, with "Double-play" for internet and phone.
- We're not so interested in TV and we'll get TV later from "cut the cord" internet, like Netflicks?? (We don't know anything about TV - haven't had a TV or video recorder in almost 16 years.)
- Important detail: We will keep only two of our three 212 POTS telephone numbers in the FIOS - one of mine (the one that has the DSL now), and my wife's. We'll drop our third line (or I'll migrate it first to GoogleVoice or something.)
--- Vz says the second phone line in the FIOS as FDV costs an extra $9.99/month on the double-play bill plus fees and taxes.
--- Vz says that we can keep our two old 212 tel numbers in the FIOS as FDV but cannot keep the two separate names on the numbers. When we call out, the recipient's caller ID must see the same name on both numbers. (UNLESS we pay a LOT more money for a truly separate account.) That's a minor problem. Worst case, they'll both show my wife's name on outgoing calls for business purposes.
---- VZ says keeping my wife's tel number unpublished costs $5 more per month + fees and taxes. That's annoying.
- So far, VZ says it will NOT hit us with ANY equipment charges or installation/initiation/upfront anything fees. Vz says it will supply the WiFi router ("Galaxy"?) without extra charge. Possibly because I'm coming from DSL - not sure.
---- What ONT and router should I ask for?

What Ping on speedtest.net on your FIOS gigabit ???
I'm going to get FIOS gigabit in Manhattan, NYC.
If you go to speedtest.net, what ping are you getting? Ping, not download or upload speed.
Important - please try this on your WIRED computer. If you don't have one, then your WIFi. Please let us know which. And please tell us where you are.

Fresh Start Offer
I'm nearing the end of my current 2-year agreement on my Triple Play service (75Mbps, Prime HD, one phone.) When I checked MyVerizon today, it presented a "Fresh Start Offer" that looked interesting at first, but isn't as good as it looks. For me, the big change is the loss of "DVR Free for Life" discount. Those without the discount might find this interesting.
Highlights:
o) Two offers for me, one continuing my current 75MBps and one with Gigabit. Base cost is $114.99 and $134.99 with agreement incentives (no taxes, fees, equipment). Totals below.
o) TV switched from the old "Prime" to "Preferred." Some channels I don't care about lost.
o) $150 gift card offered. Good for VZ Wireless products and accessories only.
o) Upgrade to Gigabit costs $150 ($50/mo for three months)
o) Two years of Spanish Channel or Sports Pass for free.
o) My current "DVR Free for Life" discount is removed.
o) Regional Sports Network Fee and FiOS TV Broadcast Fees go up a lot (now $6.39 and $3.49). I suspect this will happen with any new agreement.
Total including all discounts with taxes and fees:
75MBps: $164.64
Gigabit: $193.64
Both with one M-DVR and one STB.
In short, it looked like a good deal until I dug into it. Others may find it more interesting depending on their current discounts.
I'll be calling retentions soon. Maybe they can do better.
Good Luck.

[ONT] my evidence only 1gig subs get provisioned well ?
i'm monitoring 3 ip's over the weekend (geolocation).
my current 50:50 public ip (Rego Park)
one i had a month ago (Forest Hills)
one i had two months ago. (New Rochelle)
notice the dramatic difference with the middle one :o
my guess is that me and the bottom guy are 50:50
while the middle guy is a 1gig subscriber.
i'm 7ms 2nd hop avg latency over my 2000' 2yo pon
(my best to worst latency is 0-60 = indicating congestion)
while a 1gig neighbor is 0ms latency on that ONT-OLT hop.
the only explanation i can come up with is
verizon herds all none 1gig subs on to congested pons
and reserves the rest for the 1gig subs (and cell sites).
maybe they have not actually upgraded their system at all,
just created a first class and coach class pon segregation.
and simply expanded the use of formally dark fiber strands.
if you are thinking, well maybe the middle guy is an office
that's closed over the weekend, consider that the top and
bottom residential guys are sleeping at night,
and their ping didn't calm down at all.
this may also explain why it's so insanely expensive for
existing 50:50's to upgrade to 1gig - it's because they
have to dispatch a premise/area tech to physically move
your strand cross connect to a different "first class" pon.

Verizon Email Transition to AOL's Servers
On Feb 15, Verizon email will start to transition to AOL's servers, like what happened in FL, CA, and TX.
Here are all the deets: https://www.verizon.com/Support/Residential/email/migrations.htm
It may take a while for you to get the transition email. Once you do, you have a month to switch.

Speed upgrade email
I just received an email that Verizon upgraded my speed from 50/50 to 75/75 at no charge (thanks, Verizon!). Speed tests are still showing 50/50 with some fluff, though. I reviewed the FAQ and searched this forum, but didn't see any guidance on how the speed upgrade would be applied or if I needed to do something to trigger the upgrade. I assume I would need to reboot my router, ONT, or possibly both. I'm currently using a non-VZ router, but have an MI-424WR available for troubleshooting. Perhaps I need to connect the MI-424WR to see what happens.
Any recommendations?

[ONT] Ethernet LED on Alcatel I-211M-L and Wan Ethernet LED on g100
Hello,
So when rearranging my equipment, I noticed that something seemed off with the status lights(maybe this is normal operation idk I am still getting good speeds) . Anyway on the ONT, both leds are blinking. One is a constant blink, the other resembles network activity. On the g100 only the upper led is lit and blinks with network connectivity. Is this normal?

[FiOS Phone] Can you keep phone number if moving to different area code?
If you are moving from a county with one area code to a county next door to a different area code, will they let you keep your phone number (landline) or do they make you get a new phone number with that county's area code? (I am talking about 2 counties in the same state, right next to one another, but different area codes.) If I have to move, I want to keep my phone number, but if I have to move to the next county, it's a different area code... Do they let you keep it?

AOL Mail: Update your Verizon.net email security settings
I received an email from AOL Member Services with the subject "AOL Mail: Update your Verizon.net email security settings". My Verizon.net email has been working but I wanted to update what I have since they asked me to. The POP3 works; I can receive email.
I use "Postbox". Sending does not work; Postbox says the connection to smtp.verizon.net was lost. My outgoing server is set as follows.
Server: smtp.verizon.net
Port: 587
Connection security: SSL/TLS
Authentication: Encrypted password
User Name: myaccout@verizon.net
That is the best I can think of based on what is shown in:
How do I set up other email applications to send and receive my Verizon.net mail?
https://help.aol.com/articles/how-do-i-set-up-other-email-applications-to-send-and-receive-my-verizon-net-mail?ncid=mbr_comdefeml00000002
I tried setting the Connection security to "STARTTLS" but that did not work. I tried using port 465 but it says that that does not support encrypted passwords so the Verizon instructions seem wrong.
Does anyone know what works? I have not tried calling Verizon but I will if no one here knows.

Maryland gigabit rollout (and other bits)
I've been watching the rollout in Maryland and it looks like gigabit is spreading between 495 and 695 (so Silver Spring to Catonsville).
It then seems to jump from Catonsville directly to Towson.
Meanwhile, Verizon actually spread its footprint north of Hunt Valley into the Sparks area - but is only offering 1 internet tier - 50mbps.

[Networking] ONT Ethernet to Google Wifi Setup Guide (new option 11 in FAQ?)
After reading the DSL reports FiOS router config and feeling nauseous about some of the options, (second router!) I tried something new. I have deployed a setup that eliminates the garbage FiOS router and does not require a MoCA bridge. I am using a Google Wifi third-party router and an unmanaged switch to handle the backhaul. The Arris STB connects to the network via Ethernet.
This setup differs from any in the FAQ because it does not attempt to make use of the Verizon router and does not bother with MoCA. I only assume that the Ethernet jack on the STB is enabled and that Verizon isn't completely incompetent at some basic networking.
This configuration worked out of the box. I did not call Verizon once and wasn't present during the install. This equipment is all very new, installed in the last few months. ZIP Code is 21212.
## Initial setup
The existing structure was typical FTTB (fiber to the building). There was an ethernet patch cable and a short bit of coax running from the ONT to the Quantum G1100.
## New Setup
Here's a guide to the setup. A photo of the configuration and a network diagram are attached.
Part 1: in the closet
1. Connected the outgoing coax directly to the ONT
2. Ran ethernet from the ONT to the WAN port on the first Google Wifi and execute the Google Wifi setup
3. Execute the setup for the other Google Wifi points (must be set up over mesh)
4. Turned the unmanaged switch on and connected all the Google Wifi nodes, Sonos, and a printer via Ethernet. There is a patch cable between the main Google Wifi LAN port and port one on the switch (although it wouldn't matter which port, it's unmanaged)
Part 2: in the TV room
5. Connected the second Google Wifi via Ethernet (through the walls) to the network.
6. Ran Ethernet from the second Google Wifi LAN to the Ethernet jack on the Fios STB (Arris VMS1100).
7. Hard reset the STB.
Part 3: testing
8. Wait for STB to boot. Run tests: Guide? Pass. On Demand? Pass. Regular TV? Pass. DVR'd shows? Pass.
9. Run a speed test on Google Wifi. Results: 150 Mbps down/149 Mbps up!
## Epilogue
The Quantum G1100 is currently sitting in the cabinet collecting dust. The Google Wifi is serving unfettered FiOS internet, and all of the features are working as expected.

Question About Type of FIOS TV Service and Availability Accuracy
Hi, I live in Brooklyn, NY and have some questions about what type of FIOS TV service will Verizon offer when it becomes available in my building. Will it be the traditional service with the set top boxes or will it be the IPTV online based streaming service. Also, I checked online with the FIOS availability tool and it shows that my building should be getting FIOS in a few weeks. I also checked the address of a nearby building and it said that FIOS is available in that building. How accurate is the FIOS availability lookup tool on the Verizon website? Thanks.

When you do a move order do you have to send your current router back and get a new one or will they transfer your equipment? I'm using my own router right now but have a free quantum router sitting on a shelf that I want to pack away but if I'm going to need to send it back I'd rather do that now.

Gigabit connection but slower speed that before my upgrade
Hi all,
I upgraded from my 75/75 speeds and at that time i used to get 80mbps-9mpbs consistently over wifi. Now I get in 50-60mbps range.
Here is my setup. ONT in the basement and router next to it connected via ethernet. I have fios network extenders in the second level which is connected to ethernet on the back that goes into the ethernet port on the wall, which goes down to the basement and is connected to the router.
My speed tests are really low, I have a ATV4k which is in the first floor and connected via ethernet, when I run speediest on the Apple tv, the first day it showed 920mpbs/930mbps or something, but now it just shows 131mbps or so and 936mbps. the download has slowed down but the upload is consistent.
In my router settings, I have set the 2.4ghz channel to 11 and 5ghz channel to 153, When I scan my wifi only my network shows up, but I see 4 SSID, i guess this is due to the fios extender?
Can someone help?

FiOS Gigabit Connection
Hey everyone!
I've been waiting to post this for a while now... It's my pleasure to introduce Instant Internet by FiOS FiOS Gigabit Connection.
This is the name for the new 750/750 tier. ONTs will actually be provisioned for 1024/1024 aka Gigabit, but due to limitations with GPON and Ethernet, expect closer to 940/940.
UPDATE 4/23: ONTs are still provisioned for 1024/1024, and Verizon now brands it as gigabit internet. Nothing has changed about the tier except the name.
Rollout:
As always, dates subject to change. Listed below are general areas, there may be some parts in the listed areas that have/do not have gigabit that are listed otherwise.
Jan 14: New York, Northern New Jersey, Philadelphia, Richmond, & Hampton Roads
Jan 25: Boston and Norfolk
Apr 27: Instant Internet becomes Gigabit Connection for New Customers
Apr 30: Instant Internet becomes Gigabit Connections for Existing Customers and expands to Providence, Washington DC, Montgomery & Howard Counties
2017: Rollout Continues to Baltimore County, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Southern New Jersey, Boston & Philadelphia Suburbs, & More
Pricing:
In areas without Gigabit Connection:
50/50 Base
100/100 +$10 from 50/50
150/150 +$10 from 100/100
300/300 +$100 from 150/150
500/500 +$100 from 300/300
In areas with Gigabit Connection (eventually everyone):
50/50 Base
100/100 +$10 from 50/50
150/150 +$10 from 100/100
300/300 +$30 from 150/150
1024/1024 +$50 from 300/300
As you can see, this is a huge price reduction. 300/300 and 1024/1024 are now more affordable, instead of being ridiculously high.
Please note that if you're an existing customer, your existing bundle discounts may cause a different price to show up. That's normal, as some of your discounts may be specific to the speed you have currently.
This post will be updated with new information as I get it.
