Question about a new install

I was thinking of leaving Optimum for FiOS but wondering if I would get installed in the COVID situation. I've had FiOS in the past and switch to Optimum 2 years ago. The old ONT is in the basement. Not sure how old the ONT itself is (Model I-211M-L). If I ordered internet only (400/400) could they just activate the service remotely for the install since everything is in place in my home? I also would like to continue using my UniFi network equipment. I'm assuming I'd be able to connect to it via the ONT ethernet port? Also, does anyone know which wavelengths FiOS operates on?

[Router] ?Upgrade? to Gigabit

Has anyone who “upgraded” to Gigabit experienced difficulty connecting to or maintaining a WiFi connection within their house? The tech said we would never have to reset the router and we would have no issues with connection anywhere in the house. My original router was at the front of the house on the second level. Presumably to make his life easier, he installed this router in the kitchen which is main level closer to the front of the house. Not only have we had to reset the router dozens of times because we lose the internet at random, we also have a very weak signal on the second level. Has anyone had this issue? I called the other day and was told he increased my router speed during the communication. Why would that be necessary? Shouldn’t I have always been getting the speed I paid for?

[Networking] poor GRE throughput across G1100 router

cross posted in VZ's forums. I have a FiOS G1100 (hw ver 1.03, software 02.02.00.16). Because FiOS doesn't offer IPv6 in my area, I am using a GRE tunnel to carry IPv6 over my IPv4-only network. I have gig service, but can't get anywhere near full performance via GRE. Here's the setup: Tunnel router A is in a datacenter, with a public IP address and a 10G connection. It has a GRE tunnel with the remote side being my external FiOS IP. My G1100 has a DMZ host configured that forwards traffic to the internal (192.168.1.x) address of my tunnel router, Tunnel router B. Tunnel router B has a GRE tunnel configured with the remote side being tunnel router A's external address, and the source being its internal (192.168.1.x) address. This means that all GRE traffic gets natted by the G1100 so that the internal IP becomes external and vice versa. I run iperf testing between the two devices that terminate my tunnel. If I do it via IPv4, I get 800+mbps throughput. If I do it via IPv6 (over the tunnel) I get 150mbps. In both cases, it's using the NAT on the G1100, so it's definitely capable of transferring traffic between these devices at good speed, but when GRE comes into play, the performance suffers. Same results if I do an xfinity speed test (it's dual-stack so I can test with IPv4 and IPv6 and see the difference in performance). I have tested this several different ways, and if I force 700mbps of UDP across the GRE tunnel with IPerf, based on the bandwidth monitors available on the G1100's UI, I can see the traffic come into the G1100 at 700+mbps, but only 150mbps of that arrives inbound at the tunnel box on the other side of the G1100. I suspect that there is some sort of rate-limit on GRE traffic through the G1100 that is affecting me, but I can't find any place to check this in the FiOS router UI. There are no alerts in the firewall logs indicating it's seeing this as attack traffic, either.

Vz FIOS does NOT provide important network security known as BGP

I sent this email to the Verizon Executive Escalation Team today. You might also try to contact Vz about this: Dear Vz Executive Escalation team – I am a big fan of Verizon FIOS, have just renewed and have recommended FIOS to friends and family. On occasion, your exec. escalation team has helped very nicely with minor problems. However, per today’s article in Ars Technica, Verizon as ISP is NOT providing an important network-wide type of security known as BGP, for Border Gateway Protocol. As a result, huge amounts of internet traffic – your internet traffic -- have been diverted through Chinese and Russian servers. The details are at this article on Ars Technica: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2020/04/new-cloudflare-tool-can-tell-you-if-your-isp-... I have confirmed that Verizon does NOT provide this type security by trying cloudflare's BGP check, at this page: https://isbgpsafeyet.com/ The results for me are these, both at home and at work (as my company uses Verizon Business FIOS): FAILURE Your ISP (Verizon, AS701) does not implement BGP safely. It should be using RPKI to protect the Internet from BGP hijacks. Details fetch https://valid.rpki.cloudflare.com correctly accepted valid prefixes fetch https://invalid.rpki.cloudflare.com incorrectly accepted invalid prefixes That cloudflare site, https://isbgpsafeyet.com/ , explains the protection if you scroll down the page. Please advise when Verizon will correctly implement this type of security. Thanks.

New Install Question

Hi, I have had an install scheduled for next week for some time now. Will this install still take place as scheduled? I understand they are not scheduling new appointments right now. The location I moved to requires a tech install, and Verizon is my only option. I called the 888 number, but didn't really trust the agent on the phone

Email again --- mail is going to AOL spam and never to me

I've been using Verizon email for many years. Suddenly, I'm not getting messages. Looked on Webmail and not there either. I looked in the spam folder on webmail and there they were. Messages from my sister and son, mostly. Doesn't appear to be a way to stop it. Unless someone here knows. I've done searches and no one seems to have an answer.

Mix & Match conversion forced to Gigabit

Today my in-laws chatted with a rep that absolutely wouldn't change their out of contract plan to Mix & Match without upgrading the internet to Gigabit. The rep said they could downgrade after a month to whatever speed they wanted. The rep said this multiple times. The rep was being pushy as they went through the different offers that they could get with the legacy plan. I don't necessarily trust the statements coming from the rep due to that (they probably should have punted). Has anyone else seen something similar to this? Is this really a requirement to switch the plan? For reference, the plan went from out of contract 50/50 (w/ free 100/100 upgrade) + Preferred TV + Phone to Mix & Match Gigabit + More Fios TV + Phone. Thanks, Josh

My entire neighborhood has FIOS but for some reason our cul-de-sac does not (we are all part of the same HOA and are supposed to have the exact same access to FIOS). I have copies of signed Verizon easements etc that approves extending FIOS to our street. For what it's worth, we've been Verizon customers for 10+ years and would love to keep it that way. Can someone please assist is helping us get the FIOS access extended to our street? Thank you!

Return to FiOS requires new ONT?

Had FiOS Ethernet 2 years ago and decided to return. Thought they could turn the ONT back on and would be good to go. However they are saying requires new ONT although only going for the 200mbs service. Rep said best they could do is 3 down 1 up without the new ONT which makes no sense. I'm sure I had 50/50 previously. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

[Router] G3100 web interface issues

Hello, Banging my head against the wall here. Several parts of the G3100 web interface have been going haywire seemingly at random-- specifically, the following elements stop working until I reset the router, then it breaks again sometime later: 1. "Network status" page that should show all connected devices, but instead shows that there are no networks to display (attachment: 2_netstatus.png). 2. "Network connections" page that should show status of wifi access points and more, but instead everything incorrectly appears disconnected (attachment: 3_netconnections.png). 3. "IPv4 Address Distribution" page that should show DHCP leases, but shows DHCP service is disabled (attachment: 4_dhcp.png). Bizarrely, the home page of the router shows that everything seems fine (attachment: 1_mainpage.png). WAN connection is active, devices are successfully connected through coax, wifi, and ethernet. Logs (and testing) show DHCP leases are still being given out, DNS is still resolving, etc. Additional details: - The G3100 is connected to the ONT through Ethernet (gigabit internet only, no TV/set top boxes). - The G3100 is also connected to the wall with coax, which provides connectivity to two ECB5240M devices elsewhere in the house. I do believe I eliminated these extenders + the devices connected to them from being responsible as I've disconnected the coax line from the router entirely and found that the issue persisted through a router reboot. - The G3100 firmware appears to be pretty recent, 1.3.6.27. Has anyone else seen this issue? Any thoughts of what I could check or what it might be?

[Networking] G3100 DCHP server breaks when adding static leases

$

Just got the G3100 last week. So far things are working pretty well. Wireless speeds/range are pretty good once I got the router to use the DFS channels. I seem to have encountered an issue when setting static leases. When I set static leases for a few of my devices (leasing the same IP it already had but just making a DHCP reservation), the DHCP server seems to stop working for some reason. I didn't notice anything wrong at first because devices still had their leases, but a few minutes later I changed the wireless mode for the 2.4Ghz radio, and at this point most of my devices dropped their connection as they did not get an IP leased. I then tried to reboot the G3100, which caused the same issues and I now dropped the wired clients. I even went to the DHCP server settings page and turned off/on the DCHP server, but that didn't help. I was looking at the LAN DHCP log and there were no new entries after I made the static IP change. It wasn't until I changed the static leases back to dynamic that the DHCP started working again. I will be doing more investigating as it may be something as simple as the way some of my devices are named (containing a space) that crashes the DHCP server, as it appears that the code in the router may have some bugs in how it handles spaces and other characters based on other posts I saw. I'm going to try and statically lease 1 device at a time and see if the issue persists with devices that have no spaces in the name versus those that do. I'll report back later with findings.

Hans has been on the business news TV quite a bit lately. He was on CNBC's Mad Money and Cramer asked him about expanding Fios. In a round about way Hans said no expansion except in areas where it is now deployed. :-(

I decided to increase my Internet speed, and add a bigger CATV package, and decided to do it via chat, because last time I tried, they gave me a better price than I found using the online wizard. but.... "I'd like to upgrade to 100/100 internet and the Preferred video package - is there a bundle or double-play for that?" Ashley: I can help you with that "Actually, I've changed my mind about the Internet portion, I'd like to use the 75/75 package actually, can we do that"? Ashley: I'll have to transfer you to my teammates, because I can't process disconnections.. "I don't want to disconnect anything!" Ashley: OK, there's a $175 upgrade fee for the router "I have my own router, I don't need it" Ashley: OK, well, we actually have to upgrade the ONT in order to take advantage of the new speed you want.... "Actually, that's not necessary either, the 1st generation ONT is good up to 100Mbit, that's why I wanted to stop at 75" Ashley: I'm sorry, but the system is indicating that an upgrade is needed, and that charge is $175. "Plus, I know that Verizon is not replacing any customer-premises equipment with the virus going on, thats another reason I wanted to stop at 75meg" ***ashley pastes in this huge per-written paragraph about how Verizon's not doing any in-home installs at this time** (yea yea, I get it; we know that) "OK, I think we're done here" Ashley: But we can still upgrade your CATV "OK, what's your cost on 50/50 internet, and the Preferred package with one standard DVR box Ashley: $159 **** I step thru the wizard and come up with $150 a month with the same options**** --I tell Ashley this Ashley: Wow, what options did YOU pick?? "Welp I can do this online now -- so thanks for your help...."

[Networking] IPv6 working!

I noticed that my Quantum router got an upgrade recently, and now allows IPv6. I was (finally!!) able to get it to work. I logged into the router administration and turned on IPv6. At this time, I have to set the DNS on my Mac to Google's or CloudFlare's DNS servers to make everything work, since I think Verizon's default DNS servers for FiOS aren't completely ready yet. But when I log onto my router (at 192.168.1.1), it shows public IP addresses of BOTH IPv4 and IPv6 now. I pass all the tests at ipv6-test.com and test.ipv6.com except having a reverse DNS name. I can reach ipv6 only sites. Finally, no Hurricane Electric tunnel needed. When I have a chance, I'll check to ensure this doesn't mess up Netflix or HBO NOW.

Outlook can't send verizon.net emails, using AOL mail servers.

I have an old verizon.net email account that Vz dumped on AOL several years back. Drat... posted this in the FIOS TV forum by accident. Recently a Mac running Office 2011 stopped sending my verizon.net emails via the AOL servers. Sending emails gave an Unknown Error 150. I am aware that AOL is getting tighter with security so I looked over the recommended settings and verified I was using the correct settings. I also tried toggling the "Use less secure applications" feature on AOL off and back on, and found out that once it was turned off, you can't turn it back on even though they stated the option was not going away until July. Then I found out once that "Less secure applications" option was no longer available, my Outlook 2019 PC failed to check or send mail. So, I started using the One Time Use passwords on AOL and assigning the Mac and PC their own passwords for AOL. Now, both can receive email, but both fail to send. They are using the recommended smpt.aol.com port 465 with SSL. Just to be clear, Mac 2011 could send and receive emails up until about the 3rd of this month, and the PC could still do both until the less secure apps option was taken away from me. Does anyone know what has changed recently to break Outlook and AOL email? My work around is to relay outgoing emails through another server, but I would prefer not to do that.

[Networking] Network extenders (WCB3000N) continuously rebooting

$

I have a G1100 router and 2 WCB3000N network extenders. I've had this setup with 1 extender for a few years. I added the second extender a year ago, and it's been working fine up until recently. In the past couple of weeks, both network extenders are continuously boot looping. Meaning they will connect, then power cycle, then connect, then power cycle. Unplugging and replugging does not resolve. Both network extenders bootloop even with the coax disconnected. Seems unlikely that both extenders would go bad at the same time. I tried factory resetting the extenders using the reset button, but given that they don't stay on very long between reboots, I'm not sure the reset is taking hold. Any ideas on why this is happening?
