Custom router with FiOS Gigabit?

$

I bought an Evenroute IQrouter hoping to solve the bufferbloat problem. I had working FiOS Gigabit in both directions (up and down) with the Quantum Gateway but a lot of buffer bloat. (Visible symptoms of bufferbloat are like, download a Steam game while trying to do video teleconferencing and watch the video service basically drop out. It's a real problem.) When I plugged in the IQrouter, it would intermittently obtain service, but the WAN link would quickly drop out after a short while. After trying to solve this, I plugged my Quantum Gateway back in, and now I'm back to 150/150. Does FiOS Gigabit work for anyone else with a custom router, or is it just me? I don't know why they would care what equipment I can use; it's a gigabit Ethernet router you plug in and get a DHCP address from upstream. The tech has been around for decades. There's no proprietary Verizon magic in that.

Trying to get FIOS in our new apartment building

So I’ve been trying to get Fios installed in our building. The building was purchased by my landlord last year and he completely renovated it into brand new apartments. Wanting to support both Optimum and Verizon he had each of the 10 apartments wired with cat5e and coax drops to the basement where he expects the provider of the tenant's choice to connect the services. The basement is huge and has plenty of of space and power outlets for each apartment to be connected to an ONT. The issue, however, is that the Verizon Engineer who visited said that the way they prefer to do installation for apartment buildings is to run the fiber into the apartments and then install a smaller ONT there. Since the landlord already prewired the apartments he’s being stubborn and won’t allow Verizon to build a path to each unit (which they offered to do). When I spoke to him about it he told me that if Verizon wants business from his tenants they need to keep the ONTs in the basement. I have initially worked with Verizon Direct on this forum and they have even gotten in contact with the manager to resolve the issue. They told me that they can provide service to us (the whole block is wired) and are willing to but the manager has to let them build a path to each unit. They absolutely refuse to install the ONTs in the basement as customers order the service. Optimum had no problem utilizing the coax drops in the basement and are currently the only provider to the building. So while this is fine the issue will be lack of competition as long as the landlord blocks Verizon, especially when the 1 year promotion runs out and they keep jacking up the prices. Is the landlord allowed to block services like that? Anyone have a similar experience or have some advice as to what else I could do to make this happen? We’re located in Hudson County, NJ.

[Networking] Need advice on improving download speeds on 1Gb/1Gb connection.

I have many questions on the speeds I am getting using The FIOS speed test both at the router (GS1100) and at my device as measured by the corresponding FIOS tests. 1. How accurate are the FIOS tests in the first place? 2. As you can see from my first screenshot my speeds to my router fall into the published maximum range. However, the speeds to my device, as shown by the second screenshot, are a full 100Mb less for download but significant higher for the upload speed. Seeing as the upload speed to my device is going through an extra layer (my computer) I would expect it to be less than to the router. My download speed seems to indicate this fact. 3. Which leads to the question as to why my download speeds are 100Mb less than advertised (unless the advertised speeds are to the router and not the device). When I first got FIOS in the summer I was getting around 920 on the download side to my device. I was very happy with that. Over the months I've seen it drop to what it is today. 4. Is there any parameter(s) I can change either in the Router or my NIC to improve my download speed. I have two NICS on my computer, an Intel 1Gb and a Realtek 1Gb. I've used both and get basically the same speeds. Currently I am using the Realtek NIC. There are quite a few parameters I can change and I'd like to know if there are some that really will improve download speeds. I switched over to FIOS from Optimum Online. My download and uploads speeds always exceeded the published speeds. OOL over provisions their speeds in order to achieve better than advertised speeds. Doesn't seem the case for FIOS downloads. Any comments or assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Help with Gigabit wifi speeds - slow

Hi all, I have gigabit and fios router is in the basement. I also got the fios wifi extender that I placed on the second floor. Recently, I have started getting slow wifi speeds. The other day I was testing apple tv speed test app and it showed 980 dowload and 990 upload speed and today when I tried it is showing 133dl and 930 upload. The apple tv is connected via ethernet port on the wall. I have my wifi exterior an router with the same SSID name, so at given point I don't know if my iPhone or iPad or laptop is connection to the wifi extender or the router. In router settings I have my 2.5ghz set to channel 6 and 5ghz channel set to 161 based on the scan and what other are using around me. Can someone help me get the max wifi out of my set up.

Supported routers to eliminate maintenance fee?

I have one of the older Fios routers -- rev. G, I believe -- where they started charging me the old-router maintenance fee last year. I have internet only 50/50 service now, and have my router in bridge mode so my Asus router serves as the actual WAN gateway. Running ethernet cable to my ONT isn't a possibility, so I'm just looking to find a new router to act as a bridge where they won't charge the fee. Is there a list of officially supported routers that will accomplish this? Is the Rev. I my best bet?

FIOS Ethernet from ONT - No Coax in house

Hello. I currently have FiOS Internet only service with Ethernet coming from the ONT to my personal router. I'm thinking about adding TV service however, I don't have any COAX run in the house at all. Would I be able to run an ethernet cable from my router to a STB to get TV? If so, are there any ethernet ready STB's I can purchase without having to rent from Verizon? Thanks!

1-800-837-4966 is the number their app is trying to dial, but that's Verizon Wireless. There's no way to get a person on the phone for Fios. Does anyone know the actual phone number one can call?

copper retirement in copper only plant?

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone knows any insider info on this. If we're served by a CO with no fiber optics, are we forced to switch to wireless or will there be an eventual initiative for fiber? You guys are really gonna have to dig into your insiders for this one cuz all these news articles are not clear on what is going to happen. I live in Sayreville, NJ where we are served by 2 COs. One in Old Bridge which has fiber and FiOS is deployed to that part of town. My part is served by East Brunswick CO which after talking to a tech that was installing FiOS at my friends place, apparently has no fiber optics whatsoever and they (the techs) have been pushing the company for years to start upgrading. Verizon has made it abundantly clear (with good reason, I am in IT and can agree with this) that they want to start phasing out copper and replace it with FiOS. While I am in support of this, am I and my neighborhood falling into this shutdown even though our CO does not have fiber? Are we going to be forced to use wireless if we want Verizon service? I mean we're served by Optimum who is giving us FTTH but that's gonna take them YEARS to get to us.

VZ AOL E-mail Issue

I didn't know where to post this question so I am going to start here. My sister uses the VZ AOL e-mal system and cannot open a PDF attachment in her inbox. She says she can view the e-mail and attachment on her iPad, but not her Windows PC. I have confirmed that the attachment will not open when the link is clicked when viewed from the AOL UI. I forwarded the e-mail to my NON AOL e-mail account and the attachment is there and can be opened. I personally do not use the VZ-AOL e-mail system. Is there a setting in the UI that must be changed? I went through all the mail options and didn't see any references regarding e-mail attachments. Any ideas? TIA.

1st I got the nighthawk x10 (couldn’t use) So I unplugged my the rent from the Fios router. The Ethernet from ont to nighthawk when setting up couldn’t set up,cause it said it can’t detect internet. But if I use my Fios router it works. I called Fios and a repair person is coming sat. 1 has anyone heard of this 2. To make make I still get the TV guide will I just use the coaxial to moca ( https://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&O=&Q=&ap=y&c3api=1876%2C%7Bcreative%7D%2C%7Bkeyword%7D&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIkaSKiLTk1gIVAV6GCh1niwOJEAQYBCABEgIww_D_BwE&is=REG&m=Y&sku=1179503 ) And connect that to a Lan Port? Is that all?

Fios Gigabit Latency Issue -- What to Tell Tech

$

Hi all. I just started having an issue with latency (when pinging the router it will hum along at 1-3 MS and then spike to 150 or 200 or 300) about a month ago. I noticed it because I use Sonos a lot and I was constantly losing the connection to Sonos (it had worked flawlessly for years prior to this). I called Sonos and they discovered the latency issue; I called Verizon and they actually did recognize that there was something going on and they believe it's a "network issue." A tech is coming out later this week. My question is: if anyone else has had issues like this a) what should I be telling or asking the tech and b) is this something that they can resolve? It's very frustrating, obviously, to have this system and have these kinds of issues. Thanks in advance for your help.

Need to get one cable box... Can I use ecb6200 for getting guide?

I am currently using HDhomerun service but one person in my house insists they have a normal cable.box back in their room. Because I wasn't using the FiOS boxes I removed their router and I am using my own. I am however using a few Actiontec ecb6200's around the house and was wondering if that would get the job done to send the data to the VMS1100 that is necessary or do I have to get my G1100 back in the mix which I really don't want to do. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Is anyone using a VPN service where speeds are as fast as possible on a FIOS 1Gb connection? I know that a VPN server will never get near 1Gb but I'm looking for the fastest one I can get.

FIOS TV not available in unit that previously had it?

We are moving into a new apartment and are trying to have Verizon FIOS (TV and internet) installed. We've spoken with three customer service representatives and one technician and nobody can figure out why we only have access to phone and internet services (according to Verizon's representatives and website) when previous tenants had TV as well. The neighboring units and others in the building have FIOS TV. Does anyone know why this would be the case? Verizon is not able to give us any context or explanation for this and communicating with them has become extremely frustrating.

[Networking] Verizon FiOS Networking w/ MoCA - plenty of questions

$

Hi All, Longtime Comcast user- I'm new to FiOS and just had my install yesterday. I live in a 2-story duplex and I'm on the top floor. The fiber comes into our shared basement, and unfortunately the builders (of course) did not think to put in CAT5e/6. So the router is downstairs, and the technician put in a MoCA 2.0 extender in our unit. The Verizon test shows that the router is getting a true gigabit connection (~900 Mbps up/down), but over the MoCA we're seeing about 300-450 Mbps. He said that this was expected, but I read that MoCA 2.0 should be able to hit closer to 700-800 Mbps with a clean connection. The coax in the house is mid-2000's era stuff and seems to be in good shape. Given all of that, I have the following questions: 1. Can I potentially do anything to squeeze out more performance from this MoCA adapter? 2. Would replacing the Verizon-provided MoCA 2.0 adapter with a retail ActionTec MoCA 2.0 pair (ethernet->coax->ethernet) potentially improve things? The equipment I have is the following: a. I-211M-L ONT b. FiOS G1100 Gateway/Router (purchased) c. ActionTec WCB6200Q My third question: 3. The wiring of the provided hardware is not intuitive, and the tech left before I could really scrutinize it. He wired ethernet from the ONT to the G1100 (gateway). This makes sense. But then he has coax going from the ONT, which then hits a MoCA splitter. One end of the splitter then goes to the G1100 (gateway) and the other end goes to the WCB6200Q (extender). Why? I would have assumed it would have gone from ONT->(ethernet)->G1100->(coax)WCB6200Q. Instead we have this surprising parallel topology that I don't understand: ONT->(ethernet)->G1100 ONT->(coax)->MoCA splitter -> G1100,WCB6200Q Could this splitter be causing some of my MoCA performance loss? Is it even necessary? Thanks in advance for any answers here.

Will tech let me move my router location?

I’m upgrading from 75/75 to 150/150 and they are sending a tech out to upgrade the ONT Currently the router is in the basement along with whatever box they installed before. I want to move the router to ground level. Will the tech do that? They are charging me 150 for the upgrade fee anyway. Just wondering what the policy is, thanks for your feedback.

Double play Gigabit with no annual contract?

So I got my FiOS Gigabit double-play installed for the new-customer price of $70/mo (+$5 Cablecard rental for my Tivo). Includes "custom tv home and family" cable lineup. Nice deal, right? Strangely, by default there is no annual contract for this plan. Nor does Verizon seem interested in signing me up for one. Signing a 2-year contract keeps the monthly price unchanged in the first year, and raises it by $5/mo in the second year. So how to interpret this? Does Verizon plan to hike my monthly fee by considerably more if I'm not under contract? Since I'm not under contract, I could just walk away with no penalty back to Xfinity, getting their best new-customer deals. Seems I hold the cards... maybe I can negotiate a better cable lineup or free HBO in exchange for a 2-year FiOS agreement?
