Dismal Internet Health Test Results

As anyone else getting these dismal internet health test results? My daytime is 60mbps average while my nighttime is 30~ mpbs. new Verizon services

A friend is moving his small moving & storage business to a small industrial park near Jackson, New Jersey. He presently has 7 phone lines and 50mb internet service from Optimum Online, but their nearest cable ends over 3000' away. The only service available in the park is Verizon. He called Verizon business and was told that the only service available was analog POTS; no FIOS, no DSL. The CO is 4+ cable miles away and there are load coils on the aerial plant at about 3 miles from the CO, so there is indeed no chance of DSL. I surveyed the park and it seems to be well served, but by 40+ year old direct-buried Verizon copper fed from aerial copper plant on the street. There are 2 separate underground 100 pair cables for our building alone and there are several buildings in the park. There are underground splice pedestals in front of each building, one is covered with shrink wrap. No wonder that other tenants report that their copper services have problems. But I spotted only one very small diameter aerial cable leading from the street back to our building. Judging by the splice case and the large coiled loops of cable on either side of the case, I assumed this must be fiber. When we obtained access to the telephone entrance room, that aerial cable was definitively identified as a 24 fiber cable. Exiting the fiber entrance termination box in the telephone entrance room are 4 single fibers. Two go to one device and the other two go to a second device. I couldn't exactly identify these devices, but they are small wall-mounted boxes, about 8" x 12" x 1-1/2" each; they have a 120vac power cord and an internal fan. In addition to the two fibers on each unit, there is a Cat5 network cable plugged into one unit and nothing plugged into the other. Both units are active, as there are activity LED's flickering on each unit. The circuit designations on both devices start with "KEGS-". I believe this is a designation for a T-1 circuit. My point is that there is an active, existing Verizon 24 fiber cable with 20 spares leaving this building and going to a Verizon CO. My friend told the Verizon business rep that he needed internet service at this site, and the rep sent him to the Verizon Enterprise group... Verizon Enterprise sent him a quotation for 10mb internet service at $600/month with a one-time $1200 charge - $700 for equipment and $500 for installation... ...my response to those prices for that level of service is unprintable! So my question to Verizon insiders on this site is this: There are issues with the old existing copper cable plant. There is existing fiber cable with spare fibers running from a Verizon CO into this building; a new drop isn't even necessary. There is working Verizon FIOS at an apartment complex about 1+ miles away, so the CO is FIOS capable. The only "installation" required at our building is to connect two fibers from the splice tray to a new FIOS ONT... Who do we need to contact and talk to to get FIOS installed for phone and internet for about ($120 x 12 =) $1440 per year as opposed to 10mb internet only at ($600 x 12 =) $7200 per year?... Or is $7200 versus $1440 the reason they won't do it? Just seems to me that this is soooo easy that there has got to be a way! Suggestions, anyone?

[Networking] Cannot get VLAN to work for Actiontec MI424WR Rev I

I have been trying to add a VLAN to one of my Actiontec routers without success. I scoured DSL Reports and the Internet in general but none of the suggestions have proven successful. I am not using the Actiontec MI424WR devices to directly connect to the ONT. I am using one MI424WR Rev F as a bridge between MOCA and Switch. I am using one MI424WR Rev I to extend my network over MOCA so I do not need to run Ethernet through my home. This setup works fine with the exception of the VLAN configuration. Devices connected to Actiontec Rev I get DHCP successfully from the firewall listed below and are able to access the Internet. When I configure VLAN 30 on port 3 of the Actiontec Rev I (configured for VLAN 30 as IP 192.168.1.253), I am not able to reach VLAN 3 on the firewall which is configured to use IP 192.168.3.1. Ping returns destination host unreachable. I tried several iterations of static routes unsuccessfully. What I am trying to do is to setup port 3 on the Rev I Actiontec as VLAN 30 to provide guest Internet access and use a different subnet . I used the following tutorial to setup the VLAN: http://support.actiontec.com/doc_files/Creating_an_Ethernet_VLAN.pdf. I am not a networking SME but do understand the concepts and have been in technology for many years. Thank you all in advance for your assistance. My network is as follows the devices are connected serially starting with ONT: Verizon FIOS -ONT Netgear FVS318Gv2 firewall - IP - 192.168.1.6 VLAN 5 and VLAN 3 are members of Port 1. Port 1 from the firewall is connected to the switch below on Port 1. VLAN 5 works and is able to access the Internet. VLAN 5 and VLAN 3 are configured on the firewall with the same parameters, other than IPs. The following VLAN works without issue and is plugged directly into the firewall. VLAN 7 - IP 192.168.7.1 as gateway for 192.168.7.0 - plugged into port 7 The following VLANs are configured to use port 1: VLAN 3 - IP 192.168.3.1 as gateway for 192.168.3.0 VLAN 5 - IP 192.168.5.1 as gateway for 192.168.5.0 Netgear GS716Tv1 Layer 2 managed switch - IP 192.168.1.3 VLAN 5 - 192.168.5.0 - plugged into port 5 and working without issue. VLAN 30 is configured and setup as tagged on Port 1 and Port 7. VLAN 50 is configured and setup as tagged on Port 1 and Port 5. Port 7 from the switch is connected to bridge Port 1 below Actiontec MI424WR Rev F is configured as a bridge as per the following instructions: http://support.actiontec.com/doc_files/Configure_MI424WR_as_a_LAN_MoCA_Bridge.pdf. IP address of device is 192.168.1.4 Network (Home/Office), Ethernet, and Coax are set to allow All VLANS. Actiontec MI424WR Rev I is connected via coax to MOCA network. IP address of device set to 192.168.1.1. VLAN 30 is configured to use port 3 and has an IP of 192.168.3.253. A PC plugged directly into port 3 should but does not receive DHCP. If I change to a static IP of 192.168.3.242 I am able to ping the Actiontec MI424WR Rev I at IP 192.168.3.253. Ping to 192.168.3.1 returns no response or destination host unavailable, usually 1 or 2 of each with each ping attempt. Ports 1,2, and 4 connect fine to 192.168.1.0 network and successfully pick up DHCP from 192.168.1.6 (Firewall).

Honeywell Thermostat

Trying to connect a Honeywell wifi thermostat (RTH6580WF) to my network and I keep getting an E42 error. When I look up this error code it says that the router isn't assigning the thermostat an IP address. The router is set to DHCP. I called Honeywell and they said it is a problem with the router settings and that I have to work with Verizon. Suggestions?

Hi, Hope this is the right place for this. Can I get my own router and then connect a moca adapter to it and then hook that to a verizon TV box and have everything work? I added a crude network schematic.

Verizon Renewal

Hi All, In under 60 days my second, 2 year contract will be up. I'm currently paying around $180 for Fios Extreme triple play as well as 6 HD boxes. It seems like it will be going up around $15 when I run the online renewal. Last time I was up for the renewal I used the new customer as leverage and was able to keep the service close to what I was paying before. This time around it seems that Verizon has started to ding a customer for everything, $150 for the modem (which has been free for me) $35 for the battery backup (free) and the 6 boxes are now $72 (currently paying $42). I was reviewing Comcast to compare and it seems like they are giving away the HD boxes now for free. That will slash my bill in almost half as I get all the stations I want with the basic service, plus 75 Mpbs (currently at 35). I will call as ask but it is unlikely that they are going to be matching this deal. Are there any suggestions I can use to negotiate the renewal? I really do like Verizon as it has generally been more reliable with their internet service over Comcast but paying almost double I'm willing to live with a few disruptions.

Bit defender box with FIOS

Is anyone using a Bit Defender box on their FIOS service to protect against hackers? I never heard of this device until this morning and wondering if it is easy to set up and manage. More about this is at "bitdefender.com". I checked out Amazon.com and the ratings for this device are low, but its idea is great, so I am really curious about getting something like this to protect my home network. thanks Pat

[Networking] Actiontec Rev I Bridged - Slow Guide / No VoD

Heya, So I've been searching around and seen similar topics, and I think everything is setup correctly on my end but VoD is still not available and the guide is slow as all get out. I'm using Option #5, Coax -> Actiontec -> Ethernet to my Asus -> Ethernet 4 to Ethernet 4 on Actiontec. Setup using the following guide: https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r27666920-How-to-Make-Actiontec-MI424WR-Revision-I-Rev-I-a-Network My Asus is getting valid IP's for all my STB's. (I have 1 DVR, and 3 STB's) My Actiontec has a static IP set (192.168.1.50), while the Asus is (192.168.1.1). Internet works perfectly fine. The issue is as in the subject... Video on Demand is not working at all. The Guide is also super slow, approx 60+ seconds just to open it. I've tried putting the Actiontec inside of a DMZ (pointing to its static IP), I've tried setting up DHCP Relay on the Actiontec in the Home/Networking tab, but nothing seems to really be working. If anyone could give me a clue what the heck I'm doing wrong here, I'd love you forever. The wife isnt exactly happy with me at the moment. LOL.

[Networking] Still having issues with FiOS connectivity

I have a home with 3 floors. My FiOS Quantam router is on the first floor and I primarily use my MacBook Pro from my 3rd floor office. Due to the space between the router and my office I added an ActionTec WCB3000n. I keep getting different answers around how to set it up. Verizon says I need to have different SSID's for both the 2.4ghz and 5ghz as well as different ones on the WCB. ActionTec says I can keep one SSID across all 4 (both 2.4's and both 5's). Honestly, neither one works that well. Verizon has me run their speed test and it always produces 50/50 (which I am on) but my issue is actually keeping a connection and the initial connection.....connecting. Sometimes websites take 10+ secs to load...Here is a speed test from a few minutes ago from this site. What should I do? -- If ever offered a breath mint - take it.

Before you could only manage it from the app, now you can manage some basic router settings and guest wifi from MyVerizon online. Big help for when you're away from home (and don't have the app on you), I don't know why it took this long. The options for this are a little hidden: You have to click on "My Services" on the left, and then under that, click FiOS Quantum Gateway. -- -Branch :)

[Networking] Need help with FIOS speed and MOCA bridge

$

Hi everyone! I hope someone here can help me sort out what's going on in my home. My FIOS is installed with coax from the ONT. I have a MI424WR router and just purchased one of the free ones to use as a MOCA bridge. Recently, my network speed is horrible. I ran the following test from my desktop computer, which is connected with a wireless N NIC: The desktop is fairly far in the house from the router and regularly has a low signal strength. I bought the extra MI424WR to use as a MOCA bridge. I followed the directions here, to include the note at the bottom regarding disabling the coax link: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/15984 The new router is in the same room as the desktop. After I completed the setup, the desktop could see the new router and tried to connect to it but failed. Since it has the same SSID as the primary router, the desktop then moved on and connected to the much weaker signal with the same SSID. Anyone know what I did incorrectly? Likewise, other than running a wired connection (which I may be forced to do), any idea why my network speed is so slow? TIA, CheapDad

Ok. I've read the FAQ's, the Options and several other threads dealing with similar equipment questions - but of course mine is special. :P Here’s the layout of the joint. [att=1] It is a small 1,200 sq ft 3 bedroom, but Wifi coverage is still an issue due to the remote location of the ONT. There are only 2 TV’s (well 3 if you count the motorhome, but no wires there) - both with essentially the same equipment (cable cards and TiVo Premier XL’s). One is directly on the inside of the wall from the ONT, the other is in the Master BR - As far away as you can get from that corner of the LR. I have Vz Tv service, but not their boxes, DVR’s or programming. I suppose I would still like the option of VOD if possible, although in 5 years I have never used it, so probably not a big deal. My current setup: Essentially option 2, [att=2] [att=3] said by MI424WR-GEN2RevF :Firmware Version:20.21.2 Model Name:MI424WR-GEN2 Hardware Version:F Serial Number:CSJFxxxxxxx Physical Connection Type:Coax Broadband Connection Type:DHCP Broadband Connection Status:Connected Broadband IP Address: 74.111.xxx.xxx Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0 Broadband MAC Address: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx Default Gateway:74.111.197.1 DNS Server: 68.238.64.12, 68.238.128.12 Broadband IPv6 Address: Active Status (Router Has Been Active For):582 hours, 48 minutesFar northeast corner of the house in the living room: ONT (outside wall - coax (ethernet disabled) split x3 out -> LR and 1 Master BR - an additional bedroom has live coax, but is not used) > Inside LR- splitter out #1> Actiontec Rev F (DMZ bridge mode - WiFi disabled), however not true bridge because it’s still pulling an IP from Vzw and can be accessed at 192.168.1.1 / splitter out #2> cable card in Tivo Premier XL - does not have native MOCA, wired connection to Netgear). Netgear WNDR 4000 dual band (in DMZ of Actiontec) handing out all LAN addresses (although many devices set static) The LAN consists of 10.100.x.x and the Netgear's WAN address is static 192.168.1.2. The Netgear is also putting out the WiFi signal for that end of the house. There is also a single, short CAT 5 / 6 run from that corner of the LR to the near wall of the kitchen which borders Living Room on the far side. Lastly, half a set of Zyxel MIMO PLAs is plugged into an outlet in the LR corner with ethernet to the Netgear. The Master Bed has the other PLA to an unmanaged switch, as well as a dedicated COAX run, which right now just attaches to the Tivo - no splitters. Also in there is a dual band Wifi extender which provides signal to that end of the house as well as the motorhome. The SSID’s are set up in a 2.4 / 5 - 2.4EXT / 5EXT scenario. So here’s what I need help with. I recently upgraded from 50/50 to 75/75. Verizon didn't tell me they were sending me a new router, so I was kind of surprised. So now I have one of those G1100’s. I was also lucky and nabbed a Rev I before they sold out. Here’s what I’d like to accomplish, and this is where I need the most advice. So I’m thinking in the LR, the Rev I as bridge (true this time) between the ONT and the WNDR4000. However, I really don't see any Options that would facilitate this set up without switching WAN to ethernet. That's not difficult, though, so if it's best, I'll do it. I want to eliminate the PLA’s and use MoCA for ethernet in the MasterBR. I'd like to accomplish this by using the G1100 a la MoCA, but with it’s wired ports functioning solely as a switch. This sounds tricky, but it'd be cool to still utilize the wireless functions, since it’s my first and only “ac” enabled AP. I plan on uniquely naming those SSID’s too. So I guess my questions are, which option best suits my plan? Will I need to switch to the ethernet interface on the ONT? The more I read the options, the more that seems likely. I also have these MoCA 1.1 adapters. http://www.meritline.com/mygica-coma-cable-kit---p-68646.aspx Apparently (although not the most stellar), the reviews seem to indicate they will work in a FIOS setup. Lastly, I have the existing Actiontec MI424WR Gen2 Rev F and a few cheap GB switches if need be. Thanks for reading this boring encyclopedia, and thanks for any advice!

Torrent download speed reaches maximum and then goes down to 1KB/s

Verizon recently upgraded me to 50mbps for free, which is I thought was quite nice. After the upgrade, strange things started happening to my torrent downloads. When a new torrent is added, the download speed starts increasing until it reaches 5MB/s or so, and then it abruptly drops all the way to 1KB/s. After a few minutes, the speed increases again and then drops back. While the speed is at 1KB/s, I am able to run a web-based speed test and see the full download speed as promised. Is Verizon throttling me or is this just the router not being able to handle so many packets? I don't upload copyrighted material and have never received any warnings from the ISP.

[Networking] Verizon FiOS latency problems. Any advice is welcomed.

Hello, I am new to this website and was told to go here to seek advice regarding my issue. I've had Verizon FiOS for about 4 months give or take now and everything seemed great until about a month ago. The main use for my internet is for gaming and the game I play the most is Call of Duty. In the new call of duty they have a feature where you can track your actual ping in real time. At first I wasn't sure how accurate it would be and mind you this test depends on your distance to whoever is hosting the match at the time. During the first week or two my ping while I was hosting or was playing on a West Coast Host was around 17ms. Pretty manageable, other friends had somewhere around 5-10ms on a favorable host to them. Either way I was happy with 17ms. I first started noticing the issue at work. The office I work in also has Verizon FiOS and we started having issues loading simple pages such as google or gmail. We restarted their modem a couple of times and it didn't make a difference. I went home that same day and tried playing some call of duty when I noticed while playing alone on a west coast my Ping was around 60-80ms. I figured it might have been the lobby I was in so I kept playing in different ones and was consistently getting 60+ms. In my personal opinion the difference between 60 and 17 ms is the difference between life or death in a game like call of duty. So I called verizon, they had me go through the usual restart your modem a billion times and then sent me to tier 2, they tried messing with my router's settings opening a couple of ports here and there. It only worsened the problem, they claimed they couldn't fix my problem and that my problem was not with anything on my end. Eventually a technician came out and we tried to troubleshoot it. My background is in Cable, I used to work for Charter Communications in the past and although not the same I knew a thing or two about basic networking. Finally, the verizon tech said we should do a tracert and see where the signal is getting hung up. We did a couple of tracerts on the command prompt and it would consistently get timed out when it reached the verizon central office as the technician called it. He concluded that the problem was not with anything in my apartment, I had not made any changes at all. He said the problem was with Verizon's Central Office. Once the signal tried reaching them it would go from 7-16ms to a long time out and then elevate to around 60+ms consistent with what I was facing online while gaming. I tried replacing the ethernet cord with a new one. Tried changing my ip address to static, open some ports, tried dmz, tried lowering my mtu. Nothing works at all, on a side note PSN was down momentarily and ever since then when I do a speed test from my ps4 it gives me an error message about "IP Fragmentation". I did some research and noticed I was not alone, tried doing the things I would see other people suggest and nothing made a difference to this day I get that message. Here's my problem, when calling verizon they don't allow me to speak to tier 2 or anything beyond that. They claim I can only speak with tier 1 support and they basically have to relay the messages to tier 2. I am almost convinced this problem is with verizon's end it being that at work we continue to lag just on simple web surfing. At home gaming is a nightmare and my wife complains that her hulu and netflix has begun to buffer. Before, it never ever buffered. I'm a fan of fiber optic services, I used to live in GA and all we had was cable so I was thrilled when I moved to California that I would be able to experience Verizon Fios and at first I was very pleased. I really have no desire to switch to time warner cable or any other ISP but, if I don't eventually find a solution to this problem I don't see any other choice. The internet works dont get me wrong, its just my uses for the internet do not require pure throughput, they require quality. Latency is basically all that matters to me at this point. So I'm coming here seeking advice from wiser individuals than myself maybe get lucky and run into a person who works at verizon's central office and I can bring this issue to their attention. Sorry for elaborating too much, any and all help is welcomed. Thank you. P.S. I did a speed test on here. Here is my results http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/2120320

Verizon has suddenly started marking innocent email as spam

:( Verizon started marking our Boy Scout Email Address as a sender of Spam about three weeks ago. No notice. No communication with us. They just blocked everything. When it started, all we received was an email reply saying the mail was blocked by their detector as Spam. We have followed their directions for three weeks on multiple emails trying to get them to unblock the mail. (We only send simple non-controversial day to day emails about troop camping trips, meetings, etc. to about 40 scouts in Troop 49 in Queens, NY.) Never any Spam. They can easily check everything we have sent on their SMTP servers to see they are totally innocent. Yet after three weeks and probably 15 requests to them (following their sparse instructions) They did nothing! We are still blocked as of today. They allow no communication with any human. Totally radio silent. We are thinking of giving up on Verizon soon as they don't care about their customers. (we have been FIOS clients for many years since it first was available in NYC) There is no way to even escalate to their management since they have removed all email addresses and basically hide behind a wall of silence. If anyone knows how to escalate to their management I'd really appreciate the info. -- regards, Lou

Opinions on Fios G1100 Gateway router

I've been using the Actiontec router for 2 years and have had zero problems. However, I like the features of this new router, particularly the A/C support, Gigabit ethernet, and Guest WiFi support. I'm considering an upgrade. I'm a little hesitant to upgrade, as I do Video Conferencing with my home based business and can't afford to have it be less than perfect. I don't want to upgrade if this router has issues, particularly since my current router is very stable. 200 bucks is a bit of a steep price, but I have seen this router on sale at Amazon for $130. Thoughts/opinions?

I had TS on the phone line twice yesterday, troubleshooting some video issues. Twice , for whatever reason, they ~reset the modem~. The modem is set @ 10.0.0.X subnet. It kept the set assigned IP. However, each time, it reset the DHCP scope back to 192.168.1.X , with the modem set at the 10.0.0.X subnet Is this common for TS to do this....
