I'm attempting to connect my personal router to the modem/router of Verizon's, and having that router's IP address in the modem/router's DMZ. It isn't working, and after spending a couple hours going through the internet, this seemed to be the best place to ask about this. The internet works on all devices connected to either router.
I want to "go around" the VZ router because I don't seem to get consistent results from it, and it's not as user friendly as the DD-WRT setup I have on my CISCO router. My eventual goal is to have the port forwarding, etc, I need to be done through the CISCO router, and just leave the VZ router alone.
The VZ router is model MI424WR-GEN3I, and the firmware version is 40.21.18(which I believe is the latest and greatest).
The second router is a CISCO E2500 with DD-WRT "big" installed on it. I have a straight network cable between the two (no crossover).
All connections are WIRED - I didn't want to throw a wireless variable into the mix and screw me up. (laptop has wireless turned off)
The laptop does not have any firewall installed on it, and the Windows firewall is disabled. (I uninstalled ZoneAlarm, and will eventually install another once I get this worked out)
I've tried resetting the CISCO with 30/30/30, didn't help. I've reset the VZ modem/router, I've also reset it to defaults, thinking something was screwed up, port forwarding to the laptop(connected to CISCO) still not working.
I've used the site "canyouseeme.org", and it can't see the 3389 port. I've also tried other ports that aren't forwarded on the VZ router. I've also tried setting the laptop IP to the DMZ on the CISCO, and it still didn't work.
I'm at wit's end. Everything I've read, this should work. The router seems a bit on the aged side, so maybe there's something wrong with it or with the firmware, I tried to force it to update the firmware, but I only got a website saying file not found.
Any thoughts or suggestions? Is there another setting that I should change?
Thank you for your time,
Robert
