Hi all,
First time poster, but I've lurked these forums whenever I've had issues dating back to when I got my first broadband connection years ago.
My issue is that my connection has gotten slow and choppy over the past week. The connection until last week had been solid and reliable and I was getting good speed both up and downstream (85/90) all hours of the day. Now when I run a speedtest (either Verizon or Ookla) the needle shoots to ~50 for a split second and then trails off to around 3-4. The needle throbs up and down, the graph is spiky and is not consistent. Many times it's timed out and is not able to finish the download test.
When it does finish, the upload speed sits somewhere around 10-15.
I've been a FIOS subscriber since January and had the wiring and ONT installed to my apartment then, so it's barely 2 months old.
I'm on the Quantum 75/75 internet only package, using the Quantum Gateway Router. I'm wired to my desktop via ethernet where I'm doing most of the testing but I have access to a laptop, tablet and phone where I can test via wifi, and which all give similar results.
This problem actually happened briefly while the tech was installing. He installed the ONT and router, then we hooked up to our devices and tried a speedtest. It came back at 5/10 which we said we weren't satisfied with. He reset the ONT and we waited another 15 mins and it shot up to 85/90 and then he left.
I spend a good hour on the phone with Verizon tech support last night, I had them reset the ONT, I reset and restored my router, I ran the net diagnostics tool and the optimizer (which I'm always skeptical of), they even had me switch round ethernet cables. After all of that the speed was still crawling. They are sending me out a replacement router but I refuse to believe that it comes down to that, it had been working fine until recently.
Currently, I can't game, stream, youtube, skype or download video and photo from work via dropbox. Even browsing forums looking for answers is faster on my phone's 4G right now.
Does anyone know what the source of this could be, or what I could test?
I'm based in Brooklyn NY FYI.
Thanks,
-Ben
