FiOS Quantum (Using Your Own Router/Firewall)

I currently have whatever the normal FiOS option where you have (1) DVR per television/room along with the router Verizon ships you. In my network design, I've connected my FiOS link directly to my Firewall which is handling the DHCP between VZ and my Home. It's then connected into a switch and my FiOS router is connected on the inside of my network at the switch. Works fine, life is good. I recently upgraded to FiOS Quantum which has the setup of (1) Main DVR box and several mini-slave boxes for the other TVs in the house. Also a "new" FiOS router was included in the package. After hooking up everything in the same setup as my previous fios (ie: FiOS Link --> My Firewall --> FiOS Router) and turned on the Main DVR, it failed to complete the initialization with Verizon. I verified the IP address and link was good. Everything network wise appeared to be working just fine. So I called FiOS tech support and the tech told me that to use the new Quantum system, I MUST have the FiOS router as the 1st hop/device in the link. Then place my network behind the VZ Router. That said, is this true? Is there something about the new Quantum setup that forces me to place VZ's router as the Gateway vs. using my own equipment?
