I have a 5 bedroom, two story house. My FiOS connection is fed from the garage, through the closet to the Actiontec mi424wr Rev I. For the purpose of explaining what I want to do, I'll call this Router A. Basically, I have Verizon Triple Play (TV, Internet, Phone).
Currently, I have the InfiniTV6 ETH connected to Router A. If you aren't familiar, you plug in a Multi-Stream cable card into this device and have 6 tuners that you can distribute throughout your house. In order to share tuners, InfiniTV says you need a Cat5e or Cat6 (in otherwords, Gigabit) connection. My house isn't wired, so I was hoping to use the next best thing without spending any money on it, MoCA.
I purchased Router A off Ebay to replace my existing Actiontec mi424wr Rev. C. I don't think the Rev C. has gigabit ports, but I could be wrong. For explanation purposes, I'll call this Router C. I want to place Router C upstairs in the bonus room, where there is an existing Coax wire that connects to my router, I believe (or ONT, I'm not sure how it was wired, to be honest). Eventually, I want to have a Router D, downstairs in another family room, again, connected via MoCA.
The router that I will refer to as Router B, I just purchased today. I purchased this particular model because of its reviews. This is the ASUS AC87R (aka AC87U, depends where you buy it). I want to plug Router B into one of the LAN ports of Router A, while Router B handles the DHCP, whereas Router A does not, unless DHCP is needed because of Verizon FiOS TV, along side with the two other devices I'll have plugged into it (which would be a printer and a computer). I currently have a Verizon DVR STB but I"m trying to phase it out.
In short:
-Router A (Verizon Router) - Handles the main FiOS connections (Internet/TV), 1 computer connection (via LAN hardwire), 1 Printer directly connected (via LAN hardwire)
-Router B (3rd party router) - Handles all wireless connections and NAS via it's USB 3.0 port
-Router C (Verizon Router / Serves as MoCA Bridge) - 1 Computer connection.
Notes:
-All devices, no matter which router they are connected to, must have access to the NAS attached via USB 3.0 to Router B.
-Verizon FiOS TV (all features) must still work.
-I'm also disabled, so for me, it's easiest to keep my main router and everything that handles DHCP on the ground level, in case it fails. I realize wireless signal distributes best if a router is on higher ground.
-Because the InfiniTV "supposedly" requires a Gigabit connection, I want to keep my Rev. I downstairs. I'm hoping the Rev. C can handle it enough. I realize that switching the routers around could potentially increase my wireless network range and throughput.
I'm really not sure how to configure this, I thought I knew. Can someone point me towards a tutorial? I'm a bit lost as to what addressing range to use on each router.
