Hi,
Question, as you guys know dyndns does not offer free dynamic ip support, I just lost one and I was looking into another service, a choice is freedns.afraid.org (good reviews) but my actiontec router does not have an option to select any other provider.. but.. I was wondering if any of the new revision models have different options under the Dynamic DNS provider option, if that is the case what are the chances of getting replacement from VZ for a new model/revision?
My router (had this for about 3 years now):
MI424-WR
Version D
Firmware 4.0.16.1.56.0.10.14.4.
I prefer the actual router to handle this instead of a software client on a PC.
Suggestions? thanks!

Does the new MI424WR has other dyn dns service providers?

VUDU no longer supported by FIOS
The streaming movie service Vudu no longer connects via FIOS through Blu-Ray or Smart TVs. Neither FIOS or Vudu has any explanation as to how or why.
↧
Verizon FiOS and Netflix
Just an FYI, if you try to talk about it on their forums, they will delete it. I noticed that overnight, they deleted at least three threads in addition to a private support case I had. Don't expect much from them.

How should a FIOS router be configured for most security???
When someone types in your external IP address on port 80, like http: //1.2.3.4 (or whatever your external IP address is), should they see the login screen for your router?
What should they see to make it the most secure & how should the router be configured for that most secure security?
thanks
PS: I have a MI424WR-GEN3I fios router.

Assigned IP
We lost power early morning today and got the power back okay. In the process my IP change to 72.xx.xx.xx which is fine and it seems no problem with the speed or latency as before. However, some sites does not recognize my ip as a FIOS's one but Verizon internet service's ip. And one thing weird when I watch ESPN's streaming events it recognizes me as a "frontier" customer instead of powered by Verizon FIOS. It's more of the curiosity type is the reason I posted, I know I can change ip I'm just wanting to know why the ip's owner is not FIOS.

Horrible youtube speeds
I'm getting horrible youtube speeds here in the washington dc area (Maryland), i've ran the speed optimizer from fios, but I think it even made things worse.
Some videos barely pass the 60KB/s, some manage to get as max around 300KB/s
I'm on the 50/25 quantum plan and it's really sad that I get those crap speeds.
I'm not even able to watch 480p videos!

Actiontec MI424WR FIOS N Router REV. I
so willl this release be for the general public (fios customers) or reserved for the upper tier only?

Broken IPv6 on MI424WR Revision I
Received this router yesterday running an older firmware version. I think 40.19. something and I connected it to my network and was receiving an IPv6 address from my cable provider. Was able to view IPv6 websites and everything without a problem. Did a firmware update to version 40.20.1 and guess what, IPv6 is completely null no matter what settings I change from stateless to stateful DHCPv6 and DHCPv6 on and off on the WAN side. I checked my internet connection itself and it's still spitting out an IPv6 address and all that so it seems to be falling onto the router with metaphorical deaf ears. I spoke to Actiontec and they told me that it's up to Verizon to handle the firmware updates, so I have to wonder why they would break this feature on one of their high end routers if they are supposed to be moving forward on their IPv6 implementation. Unfortunately according to Actiontec's escalation department, the ability to roll back firmware versions was removed on the later model routers.

FiOS in condominium
Currently we have "FiOS", the fiber comes into the basement and from there it runs up the floors on RG-11 for TV and internet on the phone wiring. I have two major problems with this however:
1) From the RG-11 in the stairwell, it is split and then runs on RG-59 to each individual condo unit. This is completely unacceptable as a lot of the channels have reception problems.
2) The phone wiring for internet is unacceptable as you only get VDSL speeds. Something along the lines of 20/4 Mbps for the cost of fiber to the home...
Is there a way to get Verizon out here to get fiber to each individual unit? Even if it requies a contractor/money, it is something I can petition the home owners association, but I don't even know where to start with this. What are our options in this situation?

box removal
I had FIOS terminated about 3-4 years ago. I want to remove the box (ONT) on the outside of my home. Do I own this box? Can I remove it myself? Is there a penalty for removing it?

Re-purpose an Actiontec MI424WR into wireless access point
Hi all,
I moved into a new house and got Verizon FIOS in the garage area. I cannot get Wi-Fi in the bedroom for Smartphones and Tablets. However, there is a Cat5 cable through the walls from the garage to the bedroom.
I have an old Rev D Actiontec MI424WR with me from my old apartment. I thought of converting it into an access point.
1. Disable DHCP
2. Assign it static IP
3. Give it the same Wireless SSID and password as primary router
4. Reserve IP address on the primary router.
Appeared pretty straight-forward until I realized that I don't know a) how to disable DHCP on the old secondary router and how to assign it a static IP. Any ideas or pointers would really help.
Or any other suggestion to create a wireless access point so that I can use the Cat-5 into the bedroom and get WiFi access for tablet.
Best regards and thanks in advance

MOCA Bridge & 2nd AP
Right now I have the Actiontec MI424WR Rev. I with the wireless radio turn off.
An Asus RT-N10+ in AP mode is connected to the Actiontec to provide WiFi coverage for the whole house.
The wifi signal in my basement is weak. I am planning to do the following to improve it. May you tell me whether I have got it right or not?
There is FiOS coax wiring in the basement already.
Ill get an Actiontec ECB2200V and hook it up down there.
I have another Asus RT-N10+ to spare. Ill put the 2nd Asus in AP mode (change its IP to one other than the Actiontecs and turn off its DHCP) and then hook it to the ECB2200.
Will this work?

Older Rev. of MI424WR or 9100EM as MoCA Bridge
I am going to bid on eBay some used MI424WR or 9100EM to use as MoCA bridges. I am going to hook up my own switches and APs to them. In this scenario, since I am using the MI424WR or 9100EM purely as MoCA bridges but not their switching and wifi functions, I am guessing that the older revisions are just as good as the newer ones, right? The older rev. ones have slower CPU and less RAM (for the MI424WR anyway, I can't find any info on the different rev. for the 9100EM) but they are a lot cheaper than the newer one.
And, for this application, is there any significant difference between the MI424WR and 9100EM?
Thanks in advance.

FIOS PPPoe use with Juniper SRX firewall....
Does anyone here use a Juniper SRX-series firewall on their PPPoe FIOS connection? If so, can you do a "show configuration | display set", then sanitize it & post it? --or if anyone knows of any sites that maintain example configs specific to Verizon FioS, that would be great...

[Northeast] WANT FIOS! VERIZON GIVING ME THE RUN AROUND. BUYER B
Well I would like you all to know that 4 weeks later after Verizon telling me that Fios is available in my area, placing an order with them and signing a contract for install, fios is still not installed and verizon is giving me the complete run-around. I am 1 step away from going to the local news channel (9WSYR) and running a story. I have a contact at the news stations that will be happy to run a story.
Basically over the last 4 weeks the following has been happening over and over:
1) Verizon tells me my order has been delayed due to an "engineering issue" and will need to be re-scheduled and to call them.
2) I call them, they say they have no record of the order being delayed and that the appointment is still on and set to go for 8-12 on such and such date.
3) I wait, take time off or work, they never show up for the install. Then they call me saying it has been pushed back to another date.
(rinse and repeat - 3 times now.)
Every time I call them they say they have no record of my order being delayed and that there's no issues.
Well now, they must be fed up with my phone calls trying to get an answer from them and requesting to speak to a supervisor (their answer always is "no supervisors are working today") LOL!!!
Now they are claiming that fios is not available is not in my area at all, never has been and that I NEVER had an order for fios placed!
Really verizon? What is this?
* see attachments to post *
Let's also forget the fact I've SEEN the fios trucks in my small neighborhood INSTALLING the fiber optics lines over the last few weeks. I HAVE VIDEO SURVEILLANCE OF THEM DOING THIS.
They CAME through my neighborhood on FOOT and hung from everyone's mailbox a card telling me that FIOS is available and to order now!!
Hmm, but now if you go on their website and put in my address, I get "fios is not available in your area." Convenient. And If I put my order number in online to check, it says "your order has been canceled." BUT they say they have no record of me having every placed an order to begin with!
↧
Verizon greed = cancellation?
Two years ago, was encouraged me to change from 3mbps DSL service to 15mbps FIOS (do get they want to get off copper) but since my monthly charge since doubled (from $50 to $100 for land-line telephone and internet).
After an annual increase in October, just got another one, only six months later.
As a result, decided to dump Verizon and make one of the following changes.
1. As a result of a recent Comcast FCC settlement, they are required to offer low cost internet (e.g. 20 mbps internet for $39/mo. or same internet plus land-line for $49/mo,.
2. Go 100% wireless. Just today, Sprint announced a 'unlimited my way' plan that includes unlimited voice/data for life at $80.
Comments welcome.

[Northeast] Hints of FiOS deployment
Even though the reports on DSLR show that FiOS deployments have come to a halt, I am seeing signs that a FiOS deployment may be in the cards where I am at in Springfield, MA. I have been seeing a lot of Verizon contractors pulling fiber optic cables in my area.
Just today I was driving into Ludlow and there were contractors pulling cables by the bridge. And there is a VZ CO a couple of blocks to the south (Indian Orchard exchange) where the Telco contractors were working. The IO exchange serves mostly residential areas but also serves several large shopping districts. The small CO exchange only has one prefix and that is 413-543-xxxx.
I've also seen VZ contractors working in the downtown area.

I've experienced ImOn (when they were McLeod USA), Mediacom, Comcast, and Time Warner and I currently have DirecTV. They are much better than broadcast TV.
I have not and will not cut the cord.

AOL Send Errors
I use Outlook as my email client, accessing all of my various mail boxes with the one client. It has worked great for many years. But my AOL out bound SMTP connection stopped working on Thursday. (Inbound works fine.) I get this error: "The server responded: 521 5.2.1 521 AOL will not accept delivery of this message."
I checked the SMTP outbound settings and they are correct (nothing had changed). So I checked the email app on my Android device and it's throwing the same errors on send, so clearly it's not my Outlook that is broken. And it's not my AOL account because I can send using the web interface to AOL mail.
It looks like AOL is doing something, maybe a reverse DNS lookup on the STMP sending server (my Outlook client, not Verizon as a relay) and not accepting messages I send because of a problem with the reverse DNS lookup. Does anyone know if Verizon did anything on their DNS end that may have change? Or has anyone seen this?

Anybody running another router behind the Fios Router
I originally the ethernet port active on my ONT direct to *my router* and then a feed going into the FIOS provided one for DVR.
Had some much issues with the DVR not properly talking to the online management of it, I put the Fios Router in front and my router behind it.
I've been troubleshooting a issue with some SIP issues I'm having with the VOIP phone. It works behind the router but certain things were not working....
Anyhow, took my router out of equation, and all my devices are behind just the Fios Modem. My *sip* issue is gone.
Just waiting for my password lockout to timeout - now that I realized the password is in the back of the unit to see if I can mess around with the settings
