Question: Does all internet traffic have to initially go through a router in a home network?
Background: I currently have Verizon Fios for my internet service. Currently, from the ONT, an ethernet cable is connected to Verizon's Quantum Gateway Router. From the router's LAN ports, several ethernet cables go to various parts of my house to where my computers are located.
Can I set up my network differently in the following manner?
Instead of a router, an ethernet cable comes from the ONT and connects to a switch. From there, ethernet cables will go to the various parts of my house. One of these ethernet cables will connect to the Quantum Router in the middle of my house.
I want to change it like this because right now, the Quantum Router is located in my basement. So, the wireless signal can't reach all the parts of my house. I want to move the router to the middle of my house.
However, does the Router HAVE TO be placed right after the ONT in order to distribute the different signals to where they are supposed to go? As well as providing security? Or can the Router be located at one of the ends of the switch's branches and still perform it's function?
*Sorry I know this is a newbie question but I'm a beginner at all this stuff.
