Hi, This is my first post here. This may seem simple but I'm lost.
I have Verizon Fios with the Actiontek MI424wr rev 1 Firmware 40.21.18. I have had my firewall setting on HIGH for awhile with no problems streaming netflix, Hulu, Funimation but a certain legal anime site (CR) wont play the video when the firewall is on HIGH.I prefer it to be on High because I'm using Linux and (since I haven't mastered IPtables) the OS firewall is pretty weak and there are not really any third party options. Using Chrome I can log in but all I get is 1 second 'flash' of the video and then just a black screen for a period of time ranging from 3 to 13 minutes at which point the video will play. If I use firefox it wont play at ll (i'm pretty sure because it 'times out'). If I skip back or ahead I will have to wait 3 to 13 minutes (random depending on day, I've timed it- strange, IDK). I haven't talked to their support about it as I assume they will say to just keep the router firewall on the default medium. To be clear, everything plays fine then.
I have tried using openDNS to no avail. I dont have this problem with any other website but theirs.
The question is by putting the router's firewall on High am I possibly blocking a port or a certain protocol? And if so how do I find out and what might I change in the settings to allow this site/protocol/port/IDK to not be restricted at the HIGH setting level.
(I almost didn't include the random 'time to play' thing because it's confusing but maybe it is a clue?)
I have seen this thread that seems may be related vaguely: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28071070-How-to-Reddit-YouTube-firewall-rule-with-MI424wr#28071070
Here is what each setting (medium and high) say in the router UI:
ON MEDIUM:
Typical Security (Medium)
Inbound Policy: Reject.
Remote Administration settings will override the security inbound policy.
Outbound Policy: Accept.
ON HIGH:
Maximum Security (High)
Inbound Policy: Reject.
Remote Administration settings will override the security inbound policy.
Outbound Policy: Reject.
Outbound access is allowed to the following services: DHCP, DNS, IMAP, SMTP, POP3, HTTPS, HTTP, FTP, Telnet.
CHROME:Version 50.0.2661.102 (64-bit)
OS: Linux Mint KDE 17.3
Adobe Flash Player - Version: 21.0.0.242
Shockwave Flash 21.0 r0
Widevine Content Decryption Module - Version: 1.4.8.885
Enables Widevine licenses for playback of HTML audio/video content. (version: 1.4.8.885)
Any help appreciated
For reference- My skill level is: I know how to log into the router, I have changed wireless from WEP to WPA-2, I have changed the wireless channel for better reception and adjusted the firewall. Beyond that everything else under advanced settings is greek to me.
Thanks :)
