I'm seriously contemplating switching to FiOS from Optimum. As you all know, a 2 year contract is required to get the best price, but I am wondering how upgrading my service works. In particular, I don't really know how much television or internet I want, so I'm thinking I'll go with a basic package -- 100/100 Mbps internet and TV Essentials, which comes out to $65 plus $12 STB rental, plus taxes/fees estimated by Verizon's calculator to come out to $83 total. I'll be purchasing my own router. So, a couple of questions...
1) Does this final figure of $83 seem about right, or are there more fees I'm unaware of?
2) Purchasing my own router through eBay and calling customer service is the best (only) way to get my own router? Or is there a better way to do this, like take their provided router at install then return later?
3) Most importantly, how do upgrades work? Let's say I want to upgrade to 150/150 later on down the road. Currently it's $20 more. If I want to upgrade to this a month later, can I do it, and will it be $20 more? 10 months later? 19 months later? And what if, 18 months later, Verizon's plans change, so that, hypothetically, 100/100 is deprecated and there's new plan offerings, how does upgrade pricing work then? I realize some of this is hypothetical, but I assume some of you have enough experience to take a good guess or analogy at what might happen.
4) Can I downgrade after an upgrade?
5) Anything else I need to know about a new install?
Sorry for the extensive questions and thanks in advance.
