Hi,
I am thinking of getting FiOS internet (150/150) for my apartment. I am trying to figure out how the apartment building is wired, with very little luck so far.
As I understand it FiOS in apartment buildings comes either with one ONT per apartment or a common ONT for the whole building. According to my building's office the whole building is wired for FiOS and Verizon installed "something" in the basement. This leads me to believe that there is one ONT for the whole building.
If I read this forum correctly, apartments can be connected to a common ONT either using coax (MoCA) or Ethernet cables. The building definitely has coax cables, because that is what the Comcast technician connected in the junction box. I see some Ethernet ports in the junction box (as well as next to all coax outlets around the apartment).
Does this mean that my apartment is connected to the ONT using Ethernet cables? My building's office understandably has no idea and I wasn't able to get this information from the online Verizon chat. Is there a more advanced FiOS contact that would provide this information? Does it matter how the apartments are connected to the ONT - is there a tangible difference between coax and Ethernet?
Also, my Comcast connection (up to 105 Mbps) gets really bogged down in the evenings (~30 Mbps). My suspicion is local congestion - too many of my neighbors have Comcast and use it when they get home in the evening. Will FiOS be better in this regard?
Thanks for any information.
Marek
