Hi,
We're thinking of replacing our Verizon DSL service with FiOS but are interested in getting Internet service only. Is that possible?
We have a somewhat complicated setup at home: three (copper) landlines, two separate DSL accounts. I've been on the phone with a variety of Verizon reps and I seem to get a different set of answers every time. Basically, in addition to the above, we would like to know:
1) if they will insist on removing the copper wires so that we can't go back if we're not happy with FiOS
2) if we can use FiOS Internet but maintain the traditional copper-wire line for phone
3) if all three lines (phone numbers) must switch over to fiber optic, even if we only want to start with Internet service only for one single line
4) how the Verizon router would be connected to the ONT box (will drilling holes and fishing Ethernet cable inside walls be necessary?)
5) is it really possible to completely disable wireless functionality (WiFi is a no-go according to the wife)?
As I said, we keep getting different answers from different VZ people, and I'm no longer sure that anybody that you can reach has a good handle on the process of switching over to FiOS. I've seen the installation videos on Verizon's website but they don't really apply to us as the videos are geared toward customers who want the whole ball of wax (Internet+phone+TV).
A few days ago we got a knock on the door from a pair of guys wearing Verizon windbreakers and wool caps who were very eager to sell us FiOS. The one guy said he was the local VZ rep but did not have a business card. He gave us what sounded like an amazing deal with a low monthly rate for two years, no installation fee, and a "white glove" installation policy indicating that there would be no drilling or mess involved -- all while keeping her current phone package unaffected and leaving the copper wires in place
My wife signed up as they did seem personally legit, but I have to wonder if the offer itself is legit: neither of them could really explain schematically how the wires would be connected from the ONT into our home and then around the house, without causing a lot of mess and disruption. The more I think about it, the more I get the sense that they didn't know what they were talking about (technically), that they were simply willing to say anything to make the sale, and that we're in for some nasty surprises when they come to perform the installation.
What do you think?
