Necessary to have Fios' router? Or am I being jerked around?

I inquired with FioS a couple weeks back about costs, etc for my home. Everything looked good until the guy told me(chat window) that I needed the Actiontek router. He said I either had to rent it or purchase it. I had FioS internet a couple of years ago, and I wasn't even using their router. I had a cat5e cable coming right out of the ONT, and directly connecting to my Linksys router. This gentleman informed me that there's no way to do that, and he sort of acted like I was crazy. What's the real deal? Can I bypass using their router like I did before? It's not a huge, massive deal breaker or anything, but (1) I can't justify paying for something that I don't need, and (2), I like *my* router, and I don't really see the need for 2 routers. Thoughts? This is MD FioS by the way. Thanks!
