My Manhattan apt old setup was fiber from outside to my ancient ONT then coaxial to my old actiontec in my bedroom. The coax then split and went to my Tivo box with a FIOS cable card inside. I also ran ethernet from the actiontec to my Imac desktop, my PS4 and my Tivo (to pull guide data and use the Tivo Netflix app) I have 757/75 speed tier.
A few months ago I purchased the quantum gateway router to take advantage of the dual band wifi and WIFI ac speed. I have noticed that the new router is clearly faster then the actiontec for wifi but my devices also dropped the 5g band routinely and the speeds on 2.4 on the gateway seemed worse than the old actiontec.
After the old ONT started to fail and also having battery backup issues I decided to upgrade service to 300/300 speed so i could get a tech to rewire my apartment properly and to get the new ONT equipment. i had read on here that the new ONT plays nice with the gateway router and upgrading was the only way to get this.
So i just upgraded and have new ONT. Everything is super fast wired and my newer devices that can receive wifi ac on 5g can get close to 300 speeds wirelessly (depending where I am in apt)
But the devices still drop the 5g on occasion and that bugs me. I have tried different channels and playing with some of the features in the router software. It is also possible that my neighbors in my high-rise are possibly knocking me off or some other interference. But I also suspect the coaxial cable coming from the new ONT.
The tech who installed the new ONT ran an ethernet cable to my gateway router but he also insisted I needed the coaxial going from the new ONT to the router as well. He said it would interfere with my Tivo/cable card setup.
But now that i am still having drops I am wondering if I need the coax connection or can i just use the ethernet?
