Back in May 2011 when I switched from Comcast to FiOS Triple Play (Extreme HD, 15/5, Phone), I got an Actiontec MI424WR Rev. F. To utilize the features of DD-WRT on my Buffalo WHR-G54S, I followed these instructions: Re: MI424WR-GEN2 Rev E Configuration Thread to put the MI424 into Bridge Mode. I use MAC-to-IP mapping in DD-WRT to provide static ips to my ~30 devices. I am the sole internet user here, do not use WiFi, do have a Motorola 7100 HD STB for On-Demand and non-ClearQAM channels and just ordered a TiVo Roamio refurb. I had been using multiple networked dedicated ReplayTVs (with Magnavox DVDRs as tuners) for CBS, NBC and ABC, but they lost their Guide Data on July 21, 2015 and finally lost everything (i.e. Bankruptcy: Servers shut down) on Sept 11, 2015. I was also using Vista WMC but the change from Zap2It to Rovi Guide Data requires the installation of a TV Pack or an upgrade to W7 WMC. Thus, a TiVo Roamio seems the simplest path at this point in time due in great part to my poor health (I'm a Senior Citizen who needs major surgery).
So..., the Roamio needs a CableCard and I called to order it today. The Verizon CSR noticed that my second 2 year contract expired in May 2015 and asked / urged me to renew to get a $15 monthly credit, free HBO and Showtime (now part of Extreme HD), and a free upgrade to 50/50 internet. I don't use any Cloud services, I rarely stream from network television sites and YouTube, so 15/15 has been good enough for me. Well, she is also shipping me a free Quantum Gateway Router (she didn't know the model but from browsing here I'll guess it's a G1100). Since my current MI424 Rev. F is 100mbps, and is already in 'Bridge Mode' with my Buffalo WHR-G54S acting as Primary and all set up with all of my static ips, I didn't see the need for the G1100, especially if I'm going to have a problem getting it into 'Bridge Mode'. The DSL Speedtest tonight shows 25/15. IIRC, I think I read that the extra 10mbps is headroom for On-Demand. I wanted to research the G1100 here before committing to the new contract but she said that I have 30 days to return either the MI424 or the G1100.
Back when I first got FiOS, I kept Comcast for a month to retain access to the internet in case I had problems getting the MI424 and WHR-G54S working together. Now, with just FiOS, I'm worried about releasing DHCP leases (or forgetting to) and / or somehow getting myself into a NO INTERNET situation. I found a thread: Quantum Gateway Router as a Bridge works except.... and I found: How-to: Make Actiontec MI424WR Revision I (Rev.I) a Network so, although there's nothing about the G1100 'Bridge Mode' in the Verizon FAQ, it looks like it's been done. I also read: Quantum Gateway vs. Actiontec Rev. I but he's using his Rev. I as the Primary, with the Asus as an AP. And, his Rev. I already has 1000mbps ports like the G1100.
Bottom Line: I'd like to stick with my Rev. F. Any downside that I'm missing? My concentration isn't as good as it used to be so I tried to provide enough details and show that I did do some research on the topic.
Thanks! :)
