In this post I'll be mentioning options from this page: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/16077
Hi, everyone. I've been using the Westell 9100EM for a long time (5+ years) with great success. A year or so ago I wanted faster wireless so I picked up an Asus RT-AC66U (running the latest merlin firmware) and did LAN-to-LAN (Option 3) and everything was working well until recently.
I started having connection losses on some of my boxes. I was having a real tough time diagnosing the issue and found the Westell diagnostics to be lacking. I saw some firewall errors saying something about Rate Limits being hit. I don't use QoS and wasn't sure how to really see if that was the problem, but I thought I'd try something different by making my Asus the primary router and using the Westell as secondary since I much prefer its management interface and features.
I started with Option 4 (Internet only bridge) to get things going. So, I have a Westell LAN port going to the ASUS WAN port. This worked great for everything except for my TiVos which cannot reach the Internet in this manner. This was expected. I noticed that the double bridge (Option 5) does not work for Westell modems. Sure enough, if I plug a LAN port from the Asus into the WAN port of the Westell, my TiVos can get on the Internet, but it gets an IP from FiOS which is definitely not what I'm looking for. I'm assuming this happens because I cannot split the Ethernet WAN and Coax WAN apart.
So, I decided to combine with Option 7 (Primary LAN-to-LAN). I plugged a LAN port from my ASUS to a LAN port on the Westell. This made it so the TiVos (I have two of them on MoCA) were able to get a LAN IP from the ASUS and everything appeared to be working.
However, after a couple days I noticed the TiVos connections were sporadic. I can watch TV and communicate between them (so LAN seems fine), but when trying to watch Netflix, connect to the TiVo service, etc. it will only sometimes work and most of them time the connection will be interrupted or not work at all. Since it's able to sometimes work and DHCP is working just fine for LAN, I'm guessing this may be some sort of configuration issue with either the Westell or ASUS. I also suspect my Westell may be starting to fall apart, but since this sporadic issue is only affecting the TiVos I don't feel super confident about this hypothesis.
Note that my TiVos have never had a problem getting TV signal, it's only sporadic issues getting to the Internet.
I've exhausted my own personal troubleshooting skills so am asking for help from you folks. Does anyone have any ideas what could be going on here and/or suggestions to fix? I'd really appreciate it.
To summarize, my network connections look like this:
ONT -> Coax -> Westell -> Westell LAN -> ASUS WAN -> ASUS LAN -> Westell LAN.
Two TiVos are connected via MoCA.
Thanks,
-Shippy
