Bypassing Actiontec to own router with Cat5?

So I previously had Fios setup to where I had bypassed the actiontec (due to nat issues) straight from the ONT to my router via Cat5. Lately I got kicked off as the internet no longer would let me connect (couldn't connect to DNS servers or get assigned IPs) so I reset everything. I cannot get it working back up at all and am currently using the Comcast internet also available here. I tried following this guide :http://www.dslreports.com/faq/15993 , but to no avail (just bricked 2 of my computers by screwing their settings and wouldn't allow either to get IPs). It's not possible to get the actiontec into bridge mode if using cat5 right? If I am trying to bypass the actiontec completely all I need to do is release the DHCP lease and unplug it and plug my own router in, right?
