Verizon Router with second router as wireless AP

I have a Verizon router and I am trying to use an old Linksys E3000 as an wireless Access Point upstairs on the opposite side of my house. I have Cat5 throughout the house. Anyways I set it up once to use the same SSID but I probably didn't have the settings correct, as my girlfriends work computer kept locking her out cause it kept thinking someone was trying to hack it (gov't computer that i have no control over the settings), I think it kept getting confused between the networks and changing IP address? Anyways, I was thinking I would just use a different SSID so there would be no conflicts (there was also a problem with the verizon STBs loosing connectivity.) To avoid all of this I was thinking about putting the other router on a different network. (192.168.2.1) with a different SSID. Problem is I need to have all the devices on the same network, so I was thinking VPN. I need them to be on the same network for my Apple TVs. to communicate with my movie server and also my phone to control them. Hopefully I explained all of that correctly. I know my way around computers, but I've never set something like this up before. Thanks, Jason
