[Networking] Placing a FiOS Internet behind firewall

As a "little bit" paranoid person, I want to get rid of ActionTec wireless router. Currently any Verizon subscriber receives an ActionTec router (http://www.actiontec.com/41.html) These routers does have an embedded open port 4567. It's impossible to remove/block this port. So in addition to this port, I just don't trust this router. So I want to buy "Cisco 897VA Gigabit Ethernet Security Router" so I can turn off wireless feature of ActionTec and remove all LAN cables from it and simply use Cisco 897VA for internet. But I just learned that Verizon doesn't let bridging. So as a person not so good with networking (software dev. and infosec background), what do you suggest? I was thinking about using same old ActionTec as internet gateway, but connecting only one LAN port from ActionTec to firewall and configuring cisco firewall in a secure way so even if someone got SSH access to ActionTec would not see anything inside my home network, only ActionTec router will be hacked, but nothing in my home network will be visible/accessible to hacker. My internet is 300mbps up and down, so I'm not sure putting my entire home network's internet on a single LAN port of ActionTec via firewall would be a great idea, I don't know, maybe it would work? So what do you suggest? What should I do?
