Slow Verizon Fios download speeds - is it my Asus router setup?

Hello, I am new to the forums and wanted some feedback from people who know what they are doing about an issue I am having. I am experiencing slow download speeds on Verizon Fios. I have the 75/75 internet plan and I have been getting 5-12 mbps in download speeds. Upload speeds have been fine (around 92 mbps). Here's some background and more detail. On 12/01/14 I connected an Asus RT-AC68U router following the Option 5 (Double Bridge) instructions for the Actiontec MI424WR Revision I (Rev.I). I followed the instructions closely until this step: 19. Top Menu – Advanced – MAC Cloning – Set Mac of Device – Broadband (Coax) Using the information you gathered at the beginning: a. Set the WAN MAC of your selected Router to the MAC address listed here. b. Set the Address here to the WAN MAC of your selected router that will be connected to the Actiontec to avoid conflicts. Everytime I tried to complete this step everything would break and my Asus router would not pull an IP from Verizon. When I skipped it I got the setup to working and I was getting the speeds I wanted (around 84/92 on average). Now I did not use the internet very heavily until 12/29/14 so I don't know if I had issues from the start. I started noticing slow internet speeds when I began using the internet heavily the holidays once I was done with school and I took vacation from work. Ocassionally upload speeds would be slow too but for the most part I was registering download speeds from 5 mbps-10 mbps on a WIRED connection. I tried updating the Asus firmware but this did not resolve the issue. On 01/06/15 I unplugged my ONT box over night. The morning of 01/07/15 I registered desired speeds (84/92). When I got back form work I was registering desired speeds up until 9pm. That's when I went back to 10/92 speeds. I called Verizon tonight and the first tech told me that he was "definitely seeing a problem." He had me pull the coax cable from the Verizon router and power cycle it. He said something static maybe causing an issue? I admitted my setup and he would not entertain it. He made me put everything to Default settings so I had to reset the Verizon router. I ended up with no internet and lost the call with him. A second call put me through a tech who renewed my IP. I was back online but I was still registering slow download speeds even with the Verizon router. He had me run a diagnostic and after telling him about a "buffer" size he recommended a tech visit my apartment so one is scheduled to visit me on 1/10/15. About an hour after getting off the phone with him I am registering speeds of 75/90 with the Verizon router only. I will continue with this set to see if the issue returns tomorrow. My question right now is....Would the way I had my Asus router bridged cause me to have slow download speeds but normal upload speeds? What are the consequences of skipping the step I listed above when I hooked up the router? Any feedback is appreciated.
