I just wanted to thank those members who were and are responsible for posting
this guide http://www.dslreports.com/faq/15992 for noobs like me.
I was able to set up a pfSense firewall directly to
my Verizon FIOS ONT, then use my old MI424WR rev.D router behind the pfSense
box for wireless and STB data. *jump up & down, high fives all around*
We will soon be trying to configure and install the newer MI424WR rev I
router in this LAN to WAN setup, this will make the WLAN a bit faster (g vs. n)
The guide allowed my son and I to configure the physical wiring and the
configuration of the actiontec router, however, the pfSense set up was
a bit more time consuming.
All in all, we are happy with the results and feel more secure with the "weak"
actiontec now behind the commercial grade firewall/router and the wireless
no longer having access to our internal network machines and file servers.
When we started this project, I did not even know if this was going to be
possible (putting pfSense first on FIOS ethernet), but now we can say with
conviction that this does indeed work very well.
The forum here was an invaluable resource for our success and we just wanted
to let you folks know how very greatful we are.
Thanks again,
BigDave & family
