Hi,
I am helping someone out that has Verizon FIOS. I worked at a cable ISP for 4 hears in Tier II so I know a little about networking and I am trying to help out someone who has FIOS and is subject to getting DDoS attacked frequently.
As I am not an expert in the setup of the FIOS system, maybe you all can correct some bad assumptions I may have or lead me to a better solution.
So first I told them to log into the router and clone the mac off his PC. The FIOS router did have the capacity to do this and when he called Verizon to have them reset the FIOS, the IP didn't change. My assumption here was that Verizon used the DHCP lease based on Mac like cable, thus hooking a new device(or the same device with a new mac) up to the FIOS would show a different mac and since the old mac was still leasing the old IP, the new mac would pull a new one. This did not work however. I asked himt o verify that the mac DID indeed change, but, I havn't head verification back yet.
So first question. Does the DHCP lease in FIOS work this way? SHOULD giving a new device(or device with a new mac) grant a new mac? Is it just possible he didn't get the mac changed or does the DHCP lease work differently in FIOS? Is it possible those FIOS routers give their internal Mac when obtaining an IP, therefor making the Mac Clone useless in this case? Again, I could be wrong so correct any bad assumptions I might have.
Next, I told him he could try to disable ICMP echo requests as several DDoS methods are ping related and this might help atleast slow them down.
Any information here would be good. Thanks.
