I live in Springfield, MA and our area did not get blessed with FiOS during the initial deployments.
I was talking to a Verizon tech (who was doing work on a splice box) asking if all the work in town is FiOS deployment and he said that the future is in wireless and he described the future version of FiOS coming in the form of wireless by a box on the side of the home that wirelessly delivers TV, phone, and voice in the future. He said they are going to start the testing in the near future.
I did see techs in Ludlow (MA) running new lines on the poles. Maybe Verizon might be deploying FiOS and the techs/employees are not allowed to divulge that information.
As for the amount of work going on in town, I have been seeing a lot of Verizon trucks along with their police details (to direct traffic).

I've experienced ImOn (when they were McLeod USA), Mediacom, Comcast, and Time Warner and I currently have DirecTV. They are much better than broadcast TV.
I have not and will not cut the cord.
