We suddenly lost phone service (no dial tone) a few nights ago during a mild storm. There IS a dial tone and normally functioning service at the "test" jack on the ONT in the basement, but nowhere else in the house. I believe the problem (short, loose wire, whatever) is somewhere within the old NID which is on the outside of the house. I guess when we had FiOS installed, the installer ran the fiber optic cable into the ONT in the basement, then ran the (copper?) phone wires back outside to the NID from where the original phone wires run back inside for distribution throughout the house. (I hope I have all the terms correct.)
I found the NID door wide open the morning after we lost service and was told by someone that Verizon sometimes secures those boxes...but apparently mine wasn't. I was hoping service would return after any potentially wet wires dried out but it's been several days of warm, dry weather and nothing's changed.
Is Verizon responsible for repairs even though I have phone service *at* the ONT?
BTW, by temporarily plugging the base of my wireless phone system into the ONT test jack we will be able to use most of our phones until this is resolved.
