I can thank Verizon for what I have on Comcast (in a non-FIOS area), as they have upped their speeds quite a bit to compete with Verizon's. However, looking at the pricing and the speeds, it seems that Verizon has kind of stagnated.
Their 75/35 package used to blow anything cable had out of the water. Today, Comcast is delivering 50/10, and is going to move that plan to 100/20. 100/20, IMO, is pretty similar to 75/35, even if it's a bit weaker on the upload side. Why isn't Verizon upping the ante? Their GPON systems have the capability to run several hundred mbps symmetrical if they wanted to. Why aren't they? They don't even have a plan that is priced reasonably for consumer use that goes over 100mbps, while soon Comcast will.
Also, Verizon's unbundled internet prices are completely insane. At this point, Comcast's $15/mo surcharge for not bundling video is significantly less than what FIOS is charging. With a lot of satellite subscribers still using DSL, and other customers likely going to Comcast, why don't they get them back in line? I can see the logic of trying to force customers into a video package as well, but wouldn't they want to go for internet-only customers as well?
Thoughts?
